Very beautiful phenakite, Carles. Where did you get it? Maybe Sants? I saw several phenakites there. I got a sister of your phenakite in the Escuela de Minas, Madrid 2010.

Some people say there are near 200,000 serious mineral collections in the world. I think mine may be about the number 100,000 in quality. The problem is the 99,999 collectors ahead don't bother to post their photos.
I'm glad you like my specimens. Thank you for your comments.

I would bet just about anything that the base of this crystal is not schorl. Many, many black tourmalines are not schorl. It is difficult to imagine that the composition could have changed that much while the crystal was growing. Just a small amount of iron could make an elbaite black, and crystals growing in a pegmatite tend to absorb all of the iron available in the growth environment before incorporating other elements.

John,
I uploaded those photos at Mindat last November as if the specimen were elbaite, but the specialist who reviews the posts quickly responded "Your photo might not be the mineral you said it is. Schorl is frequently dark green or dark blue, elbaite is not like this.". So I had to correct the species' name and use the expression "schorl with elbaite termination" just to be allowed to post my pictures there.
Since I don't have a great knowledge of the tourmalines chemistry, and performing chemical analysis is not an option for me (I own a lot of schorls or whatever they could be), I must believe what other people say. In this case it's clear there's a contradiction that should be solved.
Thanks for your interest,
|

I totally agree and I would like to know who the "mindat specialist" is because he could not be more wrong.
