On the theme of good magazines, The UK Journal of Mines and Minerals is always a good read. It is not the most regular (in the British sense) publication but has a range of interesting articles. The latest copy took a while to read but was well worth the effort as it had in it a great article about Richard Barstow which really gave you a good understanding of the man and what he achieved in his sadly rather short life.

Very nice magazine indeed! Unfortunately I understand that the next issue will also be the last.

It is indeed a pity that the UKJNL will soon be no more.

I guess we have seen that with a number of such publications. Bocamina has now stopped (a magazine I have supported throughout its life). The problem is that they take a lot of work and effort to produce so need a team willing to take that on.

It is sad when we one such publication stops, but we can hope that a new one comes out to replace it

The UKJMM has always been put out by volunteer staff, no one gets paid for their work. I understand that the long-time subscriptions and circulation manager wants to retire and they are not sure if they can find a replacement for her. They are planning on at least one more issue, however.

It is very sad to hear that this wonderful journal could soon be no more - it stands head and shoulders above any other mineralogical publication. I wonder if it would be possible for the Russell Society to take some role in continuing its publication? I know they already have their own journal of sorts, but perhaps it would be possible to combine the two?

The Russell Society Journal has improved significantly in recent years and the articles are as good as those in the UKJNL. I get both.

As one of the editorial team of the UKJMM i can update contributers regarding the reasons for the uncertainty surrounding the journal. The UKJMM has had 25 successful years but like many mineral publications relies on a few people contributing their free time without any financial recompence. In recent years there has been four of us producing and marketing the magazine. However Jean Spence and Mick Woolf after many years helping the magazine have now decided to retire but have said they will stay to produce and distribute one more issue of the journal - Number 32. In terms of articles in the pipeline and finance the Journal is as viable as ever but we need to review our situation after 25 years and to see if any suitable replacements for Jean & Mick come forth. I will keep forum members advised and i hope to be able to include a fuller explanation for subscribers to the journal in issue 32 as to the future.

We finally got our subscription in, and have put together all back issues through private collections, we LOVE this publication.
With our interest in British minerals it is a Godsend.

PostPosted: Feb 09, 2011 15:34    Post subject: Re: UK Journal of Mines and Minerals

Thanks everybody for offers of assitance and support and although following the retirement of Jean Spence and Mick Wolfe there has been uncertainty as to the future of the UK Journal of Mines & Minerals we are pleased to say that the UKJMM will continue in its current form. With the support of subscribers, authors and advertisers, we will continue to develop the journal as a repository of information about British mineralogy. In the next issue an extended multi-author article will describe and illustrate the mineralogy of Dolyhir Quarry, one of the most unusual and diverse mineral localities in the British Isles.

UKJMM Issue 32 will be the last to be covered by current subscriptions and is due out in April. New subscriptions will begin from issue 33 with an additional option to pay using Paypals via the UKJMM website. Further details and information will be found in the next issue, No. 32 and on our website: https://www.ukjmm.co.uk (link normalized by FMF)
