Fluorite - how can I resist? This is one of the earkliest specimens still in our collection, acquired in the early 1980s when I first got seriously into collecting.

The southern Illinois fluorspar district ranks near the top of my favorite localities.

Thanks Bob for the compliment on the specimens and photos.

The Minerva Mine exploited the largest orebody in the Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district and was no doubt the biggest specimen producer, but good specimens came from many other mines in the district too. Here are a few from other locations, as well as a couple more from the Minerva Mine.

PostPosted: Feb 24, 2011 19:36    Post subject: Re: A mineralogical trip through the states of USA - Illinois

This is one of the new calcites with marcasite inclusions from the Conco Mine, Kane Co, IL. The piece is 13.5cm across and the main xtal is 9 cm high.

I grew up in McHenry Co, the county just north of Kane county in northern Illinois. I am very surprised that there is any underground mining going on in this area, let alone underground mining for aggregate. McHenry Co has fantastic glacial aggregate deposits, and I know. Apparently they are mining dolomite at this location for aggregate.
