The museum its present in the Fontego dei Turchi palace, build at the first half of the XIII century from Giacomo Palmieri. In 1381 it was purchased by the Republic of Venice, and in the 1621 the Republic give the palace to Turkish merchants as a place of business, who kept it until 1838. When the Fontego dei Turchi remained free, the engineer Giorgio Coen Silvio proposed to relocate the establishment of the Museum of Natural History, which would bring together the various existing scientific collections in Venice, and in particular those of the Museo Civico Correr, the Venetian Institute of Sciences , Arts and Letters, the private collection of Count Alessandro Pericles Ninni, and other minor items. Since 1923 the building was then home to the Natural History Museum of Venice.
