Hi !
It seems there is no such species as selenite. I have the latest IMA list open and am not able to find it (you are very likely referring to gypsum, aren't you?).
From IMA list (by alphabetical order):
(...)
Sekaninaite
Seladonite
Selenium
Selenjoseite
(...)

Carles,
The information that I put on the post is what was on the one and only label that came with the specimen. I do not change old labels or alter them in any manner. Sometimes I still say Constantinople instead of Istanbul and a book I'm reading still calls one particular country Babylon. If you think that it is more correct to change the nomenclature to gypsum, I have no problem with that. When the specimen was found and prepared for sale, the dealer put selenite on it.

Geology suffered from this for years as the early days were primarily descriptive. So if you add perhaps four languages, ten common usages, and two or three local dialects well.....you get the picture. I have commonly heard of gypsum referred to as selenite, especially if it was clear. I too am not sure if it is "official" but commonly understood to be the same thing and no communication lost. Geology has entire dictionaries of terms, many equivalent.

Carles,
Believe it or not, I almost put Gypsum on the post instead of Selenite. I will add a new label to my specimen and I would appreciate it very much if you would change the name on my post if you have not done so already. Thank you for your help.
Warm regards,
Don

Hi Mark!
Thanks for your comments.
Everybody can easily learn whether a species name is official or not by looking it up at the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) list, available in an updated version at https://rruff.info/ima/
That said, at FMF one should use official species names whenever possible. If you either don't know it or are not sure, mentioning only the family is also okay. For example, this is a tourmaline (or a garnet, or a feldspar) may be acceptable in most cases.
However, if you want to cite a variety, it must go accompanied by the species name, like beryl (var. aquamarine) or zoisite (var. tanzanite). Speaking about an aquamarine or a tanzanite, without making mention of the species, is more proper of informal conversations. Otherwise, many novice collectors may wrongly think they are actual species.

Hi Carles
That seem logical. I must say that the different terms are a real curse in biology and some other subjects where everyone has a different names for the same thing unless you are using the proper terminology. Odd thing, when I was in school I had a professor who, though a geologist, was a superb wetland plant specialist (you have to be to define wetlands and barrier islands). Now not knowing the informal names for the plants, I found it just as easy to learn the Latin formal names as anything else since I had little reference either way. Minerals can seem worse as there are several layers deep with finer and finer definitions. I learned about 120 of the most common ones, mostly rock forming with little emphasis on exotics and collectables. You can only do so much with the time! I am learning quite a bit on the list and old brain cells are sort of firing again which is nice. Thanks to you and the others. After working as a consulting geologist for so long you have little chance to remember mineralogy or paleontology as client needs and practical drilling concerns crowd those out sometimes, so thanks for the conversation and knowledge. It is Saturday so I guess we have earned our lifetime learners qualifications! Take care. Mark

Mark,
I agree. We must note that minerals, unlike animals and plants, rarely have two names, the popular and the scientific. Indeed there is a strong tendency to adopt a single denomination for each species since the old popular names are becoming obsolete. This makes things easier. Have a nice Sunday!

You too my friend. Hey it is Sunday; and granite now becomes granodiorite until Monday morning! I try to only use technical terms on the special day. I try not to take it for "granite" (bad joke, I crack myself up!). Take care; lets have some fun tomorrow. Mark

I am posting two recent acquisitions from a new find. The first is a quartz crystal that is host to an intergrown grouping of complex crystals of multicolored fluorite. The fluorite crystals are violet with a distinct red phantom. The fluorite has interesting face modifications of the octahedron. I believe that some collectors refer to this as "stepped growth." At the corners are cubic crystals with dodecahedral face modifications. I am posting the following pictures to illustrate both the interesting stepped growth and the violet and red colors.
