PostPosted: Jun 16, 2013 01:22    Post subject: Crater Rock Museum, Central Point, Oregon

I was visiting Oregon last week and discovered this museum in the middle of a residential neighborhood. It is owned by a local mineral club, and displays the club's interest in minerals, fossils and lapidary materials. I am not typically very interested in lapidary objects, but this museum has a wonderful collection, as you will see. And even more surprising, is the quality and quantity of fine mineral specimens, including one of the top 4 or 5 Rhodochrosites from the Bryan Lees (Collectors Edge) operations at the Sweet Home Mine.

The displays are professional, and the gift shop is large, well stocked and reasonably priced. If in southern Oregon this is a Don't Miss place to visit.

Thank you for providing your report on the Crater Rock Mineral Museum of the Roxy Ann Gem and Mineral Society. It has been several years since my last visit (which was equally enjoyable) back in 2006. The museum was constructing their new building at that time (I see it's completed now). To compliment your report, here is the link to the 2006 report I launched on another website. I hope you enjoy. All the very best,

John

Zeolites on display. Oregon has produced many great zeolite specimens.

There were many cases of fossils, which I didn't photograph because people just need to come and see them. The club has its own large preparation lab where they have everything needed to prepare fossils for display. Here is my favorite....I guess I am still about 12 years old at heart...

On to the lapidary displays... Oregon is well known for petrified wood, and various agates, etc. This museum has case after case of these objects.

This wraps up this report. I only have shown a small portion of this museum's displays. It is a very well done and professional exhibit of outstanding objects. But, what is most impressive is that it is a private museum owned and operated by a local mineral society. It has struck a good balance between the member's interests in both mineral specimens and lapidary. This museum is not to be missed if you are in the Medford Oregon area.

Excellent report and photos. Thank you very much.

I think the piece from photo 25 is mislabelled too . It's not calcite but Baryte and the fluorite comes from Berbes , Spain . At least it's my opinion.

Regards,

I agree, it is Baryte and looks like Berbes. There were about 8 to 10 pieces mislabeled, but it is run all by volunteers. I pointed out some to them during the visit.

Oh, I almost forgot. I want to thank Stephen Miller for taking me around, particularly in the back room where they do prep work. Stephen seems to be the "go to guy" here, and it is his attention to detail that really helps this museum stand out as a great example of a private museum.
