We have been a bit surprised by the low usage of the FMF Gallery search facility, but then we realised that we had never clearly explained that it can be used to search for images, which is a really neat facility. So we decided to work to improve how it can be used to search for images in the FMF Gallery and show how this can save effort when finding things in the FMF gallery.

So from now on you will find, below the normal magnifying glass , another one with the text “Search for an image” next to it. This new search facility enables you to search, based on what you enter in the text box, for images of any particular mineral, locality or combination of the two within the FMF Gallery, as the search is relatively neat, since it works with two or more words.

An example: We recently added minerals by region of the UK but you might want to look at just photos of specimens from the Hilton mine. So you enter “Hilton” in the box to the left of “Search for an image” and click on the magnifying glass and the results would be this.
If you wanted to see just Fluorite from this mine you would type in “Fluorite Hilton” and it would find this other result which are the Fluorites from this mine. You can then click on the images and go back to the thread that included them and see what was said about the specimen or locality.

We hope that this facility will be useful.

Please note that for now this search facility only searches images that have been added to the FMF Gallery, not every image on the forum. In the future we hope to add a search facility that will search all the images on the forum but, as that is rather technically complex we have left it for now, especially as the majority of the best images on the FMF have been added to the FMF Gallery.
