PostPosted: Dec 19, 2013 19:21    Post subject: American Mineral Museums and their Labels...

I have recently acquired a small number of ex-Museum specimens. What is has shown is that I don't have a good grasp of which museums are which. For example, I have one which is from the U.S. National Museum (pictured). Is this part of the Smithsonian? Is it still around or did it get gobbled up by another?

It would be nice to have a topic showing examples of labels from various museums. The Mineralogical Record label archive helps a bit but is more focused on collectors.

By the way, anyone know of the collection mentioned? Is it Hawes or Harris, or something else?

The US National Museum is the Smithsonian - same thing. Not sure who the collector was, however. If you're coming to Tucson bring the label along and hopefully one of the three (Jeff, Paul or Mike) could tell you something about it. Probably easier than trying to get them to respond to an e-mail.

It is the Hawes collection, acquired in 1884. Sadly I can't tell you any more than that as I am no longer at the museum. Better to write to Paul Pohwat now because at Tucson no one is apt to know anymore than the above, if that, without being able to consult the museum's catalog.

No joy from Paul unfortunately.
