With this discussion of Richard Gaines I felt it might be of interest to post a photograph of this fine man.

Wow, thank you very much. I'm going to put his picture in my showcase.
Do you know of a written biography of Richard Gaines?
Roger.

Great Shot of a relatively young RV Gaines.

perhaps this warrants starting a rogues gallery of photos of yesteryear's mineral collecting greats. A lot of folks have heard the name but may not have a face to put to them...especially not from their primes

Wow, you guys crack me up with all your eu-terms. I think that Peter won though, with euthanasia.

Thanks John. When I first attended the TGMS show in 1975, I met Dick Gaines. He took me under his wing, introduced me to Rock Currier (qwho was exhibiting that year -I don't remember what, exactly). Dick told me to buy the best that I could afford, he taught me a term for stream-polished topaz (a Portuguese term I think),, which I have forgotten. And he suggested that I subscribe to a little-known magazine called THE MINERALOGICAL RECORD - which I did. I would see him at subsequent shows, and he always had a few words for this budding collector.

What a great guy! Thanks John, for the photo of this remarkable person. Let's plan to talk about him if/when we get together in February.

All best wishes to everybody out there in Forumlandia

Ed in Kingman

Richard Gaines was one of the gentlemen with whom I would always have interesting long discussions and lunch/dinner always also joined by his wife in Tucson. A wonderful knowledgable man. Miguel Romero was a true gentleman.
Carlos Barbosa, Frederick Pough, John Adams are other exceptionally knowledgable people. I have slides somewhere.

The first photo of Richard was taken in 1974. This one in 1998, just a year before he passed away.
