I came across this specimen at a buffet last month and thought it was interesting. I don't know what kind of twinning it exhibits, if it is a twin, but it was juicy and delicious.

Yeah, a wonderful strawberryite - a common but desired mineral. I also found similar ones in German localities many times ... but none of them made it into my collection, they all disappeared on the way home ;-)

Hi Don. As an expert on this type of mineral, I will suggest adding some ice cream (don't bother to wait for a reaction), apply the teeth and sense buds to determine the specie:-):-)

Pierre,

It is a crime to artificially enhance a mineral specimen as juicy as this one. Let's hope Don won't do it and will be kind enough to save us some bits for us to share :-)

I have never liked the term contact twin - there is no allignment between the crystals so it must be a contact pear?

Hi Don. How do we know you did not glue two specimens together?? :-) :-)

Hello Pierre,

I think that you know that I'm not clever enough to create a fake twin like that. I know The Friends of Minerals Forum would spot a fake tomato twin in an instant. Also I don' t have Photoshop. Gwen found that tomato in her brother's back yard this weekend. However if you find a good adhesive that can be used for glueing tomatoes together, please let me know :-)

Hi to Riana.

Regards,

Don

P.S. If I were going to create a fake twin of something, it probably wouldn't be a tomato!!

Pair or pear? It is a fruitless discussion I feel! (in the UK we call this the 'silly season' as out parliament is not sitting so the newspapers write rather pointless news - does FMF suffer the same fate?)

So we could have that wonderful debate: Tomato - fruit or vegetable?

Your pair - rock or mineral?

Riana says thank you. Since we are on the tomatoe topic again, I wanted to say that I always test a (k)nife's sharpness on a tamotoe skin. Try that.

So what's the Mohs hardness of tomato skin? Has anyone done a scratch test here? ;)

Here's to betting it'd react with hydrochloric acid. And that the reaction with vinegar would be best described as "delicious". ;)

Rei,

I will try the vinegar test ! I wonder if a little oil would hide the defects? ;-)

Oops! Now I can see for certain that there is no 'foul play'! There is no question, no glue involved. :-) :-) :-)

Pierre,

One last shot taken at the post mortem exam I performed on the tomato twin. The cause of death was not determined, but the twinning is apparent ;-)
