Your last picture of white quartz rock is exactly what I search for when looking for quartz crystals, as that is their host rock. You are getting hot!!!

If it is quartz, any rust remover solution. Oxalic acid for several days is known to work well, but as its dust and fumes can be toxic, only use it outdoors. Hydrochloric acid is the fastest way, but of course requires appropriate caution. Whatever method you use, soak afterwards for a good while a couple changes of plain water to make sure there's no residual chemicals on the sample.

Before you try anything, make sure it's quartz first, of course. If it's, for example, calcite, acids will eat away the crystals.

I think it would be safe to call what you've found, "float". It looks to have been piled in that spot, but regardless, it is sort of an indication of whats lurking below. To echo Pierre, follow the quartz, follow the quartz. Not quite as easy as Pierre has it, what with all your overburden. At some point I hope this tread will merge into the, "How to find a pocket" thread, if you know what I mean. Keep up the good work.

With all the pieces or float I've been finding that should indicate the pocket is close to the surface. With all the huge pieces of quartz everywhere, I'm pretty sure all 20 acres of property is on top of the quartz vein lol

Not much to see on that piece. The quartz broke clean off the matrix.

Justin, keep your eyes open for blown down trees, the roots often will pull up stuff, as will mice , chipmunks and other digging vermin, I mean happy critters. Any road work in your area? How about new plowed fields? Any notion on how deep the bedrock is?

There is a ton of blown down trees in the area after Hugo came through and about 2 acres is all plowed for gardens. I'm finding several areas that look like hard pack but I'm not sure about the bed rock

I was walking to the creek today and realized that water was flowing under where I was walking and there was holes where you could see the water. Attached are some of the nearby rocks and the creek.

Hi Justin. The quartz looks very promising and originally formed as a vein or reef. That rock comes from such and you have to now find the reef. You are a keen fruit and I hope your interest and effort will be rewarded.

I just noted the smoky crystals on the one quartz rock. I would say you have found your source. Recce that direct area. Chances are that the original trophy you showed was found on a walking trip in that area and dumped in the yard.

What is that? Perhaps you should revisit the rock and take a close up:-)

With it being on the side of a surface rock does that mean that the pocket has collapsed and that's all that's left or would it indicate what's below the surface in the area

I must say Justin, this is quite fun, helping you find the source of that, very promising, specimen you showed us first. Before we get too excited, please make sure that what looks like a smoky quartz crystal on the white quartz rock is indeed a crystal. To find where that rock comes from should not be to difficult as it looks like a piece that has moved down a slope. That type of quartz rock weathers very easily and the source should be close by. Once you find the source, look for a concentration of pieces with facets as well as crystals. I wish I had the time to come help you search. Just a warning here Justin, once the quartz bug bites, it's to late. There is no cure.

It's a lot of fun on this end of the hunt as well. It's kinda like a treasure hunt with you guys giving me the directions and map one step at a time lol. Next time I'll look up hill a little further. :)

Justin, I would assume the white quartz is not everywhere. See if you can find a spot where the quartz is up against the darker rock that seems to be in the creek bed. Find the contact.
Looks like alot of oaks around, so you will have to get below the root level if you find a likely spot. Long handle loopers make short work of roots once exposed. Water running under your feet? Invisible forces working mysteriously out of site, underground, forging a course through crystal cavities! Wait! Get the film crew! Could happen. All your work in vain, could also happen. One last thing. Keep your antenna up. That's what I call it. I'm sure other field collectors, hunters, and in a larger sense, warriors, know the feeling of heightened situational awareness. Kind of pulling all the stuff you've heard and know together with all the stuff you see, feel and hear in real time, in order to tune into the in-obvious. Sounds all healy-feely. Rantings of a fevered brain. Look what you've done. Keep looking. We now have a vested interest in your success.
