PostPosted: Feb 12, 2015 17:49    Post subject: Looking for Equipment for Preparing and Cleaning Minerals

I signed up for the forum today to start learning a little bit more about products and equipment for cleaning minerals.

I will be honest I know so little it is almost embarrassing but I thought this would be a good place to start.

If anyone could provide examples of equipment used it would be very helpful.

I work for a company that sell Assay and Lab Equipment but I think it is completely different.

I provided a link to confirm our equipment is used for a different industry.

Just google Savona Equipment, then search under Assay and Lab Equipment

Thanks for the help
Jerrod

There is a good facebook forum called "Mineral Specimen Cleaning and Preparation" where you will find lots of tips.

In short, the preparation and cleaning depends on what minerals you have, and what the problem is. Its best to ask very specific questions, and post photos of the specimen you want to clean, and you will get specific feedback. The facebook page is geared to that approach.

There's a wide array of different cleaning tools, machines, solutions & such that can be used to clean specimens, but it varies greatly depending on the specific type of specimens that you're looking to clean.

For example, the spray cleaning guys used by screen printers and clothing cleaners work great for some specimens, but you wouldn't want to use them with delicate minerals. Similarly muriatic acid works great to clean off secondary undesirable mineralization and also for etching minerals from some host rocks, but you would never want to use any form of acid on a specimen that contains calcite or other highly reactive minerals.

What kind of specimens are you looking to clean in particular? Also, are you referring to just gently cleaning a specimen that has some dust and grime on it, or are you looking to clean specimens that were just pulled out of the ground?
