PostPosted: Feb 21, 2015 17:03    Post subject: Dioptase from M'fouati District, Republic of Congo

I recently purchased a couple of very nice dioptase specimens and the only locality given is M'fouati District, Republic of Congo. In checking references I found the following on line:

M'fouati Mine
M'fouati District
Dept Bouenza
Republic of Congo

There is a mention that the mine produced dioptase but I haven't been able to source any pictures to compare with the specimens that I have. Can anyone help out with confirming this as a valid locality or does anyone have a photo of the dioptase from this locality that they can post for comparison.

Thanks,
Joseph

If you check mindat.org you will find information about this locality, along with two photos of tiny, poor dioptase crystals. It seems that locals are recovering specimens from the mine recently, so, perhaps, they have discovered some better pieces.

Joseph, a few years ago I bought a nice dioptase specimen from a French dealer and was given M'Fouati as its locality. He had several more specimens of dioptase from there and some years before he used to have some nice twinned cerussites from the same locality as well.

You can see some pictures of my specimen in my collection thread at https://www.foro-minerales.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=20691#20691

Best regards,

Felix
