PostPosted: Oct 14, 2015 07:48    Post subject: The Naica Mine closes?

According to Manuel Mesa, Naica, one of the most famous mines for collectors, has closed due to the impossibility to maintain its drainage system. It seems that they were draining 1400 l/s and they can't continue with this effort.

To know more please use : Naica ha cerrado !!! (in Spanish language)

PostPosted: Oct 14, 2015 08:29    Post subject: Re: The Naica Mine closes?

It may be a little early to sound the death knell for Naica according to a conversation I had last week with Penoles personnel. They HAVE suspended operations due to their inability to stop the inflow of water from an open zone along the Naica Fault that they hit last January. They did not have a pump failure, but do not have adequate pumping capacity to draw down the water enough to get any kind of plug placed the inflow zone. They are now evaluating whether or not they have enough ore blocked out on the other side of the fault to justify driving a new ramp above the inflow zone and drain that side of the mine and resume operations. Naica is an important source of lead concentrates for Penoles...and they need lead to recover silver in their smelter...so they will be looking at this very hard. It is probably not as simple as the basic value of the ore, which should add impetus to their efforts. Also, there is a major military installation that surrounds the mine that gets its water from the mine, so that may influence things too.

They do note that the Cave of the Giants is in no immediate danger of flooding

Naica is down, but not necessarily out....Nils Desperandum

Peter,

You can check the news dated on 13 October on the website of the company - https://www.penoles.com.mx (Link normalized by FMF) -. This news was communicated to the Mexican Stock Exchange.

I know Naica was the second most important lead mine of Mexico, and I guess it will reopen again in the future, but not in the short term.

At least some good news, let's hope that this treasure chamber will survive :-/

P.S. Great specimens, Peter, especially the giant quartz with fluorite, wow!

I merged the last four posts in the former thread: Naica Mine - (11) in order to improve both threads.

Please more images of specimens from Naica as a kind of homage to this great mine! ;-)
