Superb specimens!!! I especially like the prehnite-LNSPrehnite5.jpg. It reminds me of the Brandberg prehnite.

PostPosted: Jan 17, 2013 04:21    Post subject: Re: A mineralogical trip through the states of USA - New Jersey

It has been great seeing specimens from my old stomping grounds. Great job, guys, and great pictures! I lived in North Jersey for my first 26 years, but only started collecting seriously during my last year in grad. school (Rutgers, 1964). I lived only 5 minutes from Chimney Rock quarry, but spent more time hunting carnelian a little north of there (see Lapis, Jg.27, Nr.6). Although I left NJ a long time ago, I have been back many times since then, collecting and visiting family (both mine and my wife's). One of my specialties has been prehnite, an interest developed heavily during my first 3 years of collecting in the northern Jersey trap rocks and those of northern Virginia, especially Centreville, In order to not be repetitious, I will try to add a few interesting things, and I apologize for some of the photography since a lot of it has been taken more for record keeping than for publication.

John Sinkankas, age 10, Paterson, New Jersey
John Sinkankas grew up in Paterson - no wonder he developed a keen interest in minerals since North Jersey is so prolific in them.
When he gave me this early picture, he said he eventually flew the plane the model of which he is holding.

Calcite (hematite-coated). Longest crystal 1.5 cm
Snake hill was an isolated igneous hill in the meadowlands of northeastern NJ. It was completely leveled by quarrying, but in the process many interesting minerals were found. It is not far from an old clay pit in Moonachie where I have taken my family to collect clay concretions.

My hammer was stolen on this trip, but I still found a floater jeffersonite and a decent franklinite crystal. Many of my early pictures have not been converted to digital form. I'm working on that. (This picture appeared on the cover of the Franklin "Picking Table" a few years back)

Copper
Chimney Rock quarry, Bound Brook, New Jersey, USA
8.5X6.8 cm
The Chimney Rock quarry was on the site of an old copper mine. A copper chunk around 90 lbs. jammed the crusher during the quarrying operation. I believe it is still in the Rutgers collection. During my collecting there, I found mainly calcites, analcimes, traces of copper minerals and a prehnite or two.

Fantastic thread. Thanks for your contributions, Frank and John.

Frank, your shots are stunning for everybody fascinated by American zeolites like me. And the specimens have an "old flavor" I especially like.

The tabular apophyllite from Millington quarry is excellent.

John, thanks a lot for sharing the young Sinkankas' picture. I am a humble reader of his work. And the 1967 field trip makes me deeply nostalgic. The worst nostalgia is caused by the times -or the things- we did not know (I was born in that year).

Regards

Antonio, FMF has been great for me to also renew memories of the past. My mother took me to see some of the last dump trucks dumping gangue minerals into the Franklin Buckwheat dump (1940's - wish I had started collecting then!). She knew very little about minerals but did take me to the Museum of Natural History in New York and gave me a small fluorescent mineral set with an antique UV light plus a George English book on minerals when I was in grade school, but my active field collecting did not start until many years later (1964). A few more NJ minerals follow.
