After a closer examination, he finally agreed to tell me the truth - these were just fibrous crystals of cummingtonite.

Thank you Jordi, honesty always pays off!

Hi Gérard. I am afraid you lost me . Did Jordi sell you a repaired specimen?????

As I was examining the specimen, I asked Jordi about the strange fibrous material that was covering the matrix, here and there.
He looked up to me and told me with a very straight face that he had to fix the specimen and was apologetic about the very poor repair work he had done.
We both had a good laugh and he finally conceded that the fibrous material was very likely cummingtonite.
Typical of Jordi's great sense of humor.

No repair, all natural.

Another specimen from Peñas Blancas, with a typical matrix of striated iron-stained calcite and clear quartz.
The group of beryl crystals on the left-hand side is partly covered by quartz.
Host rock is a coarse-grained black shale.

Thanks Tobi, I appreciate your comment.
Crystals of that quality rarely survive.

the end the crystal is absolutely beautiful;
the base with pyrite and the elongated shape make a very special specimen.

Thank you for your comment Philippe.
It's a small but very well balanced specimen, quality wise, proportion wise, and composition wise.

Thanks Tobi.
It's one of the rare occasions where I spent more time checking the calcite than the emerald prior to making a decision. It's usually the opposite :-)

PostPosted: Feb 22, 2017 10:42    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Cunas (#604)

There is a limitless amount of colors in emeralds.
These colors are among the most difficult to render accurately using digital photography and a process to shift them back to how they should look is often needed.
Problem with Colombian emeralds is that the same specimen can have crystals with different hues and we can have different darkness’s of green in anyone of those hues.
It does not make such specimens less attractive – on the contrary – but makes it an even bigger challenge for the photographer.

This is one of those specimens.
The smaller crystal is translucent with a light grassy-green color whereas the largest one is mostly opaque with a much deeper color.
And they are just 2cm apart!

Host rock is black shale.

Lustrous dolomite. Calcite in association with carbonaceous materials.

To build on the ongoing discussion on how important is the exact geographical location for a collector.
This specimen was labeled as 'Coscuez' by the seller which is a level of detail I was happy with considering that the 'Coscuez Mine' encompasses hundreds of tunnels and shafts of which the vast majority has no specific name.
