Tough question. Calcite is the only mineral I collect now. I have many favorites. I think Sweetwater Mine, Reynolds Co., Missouri is my favorite. There is such a great quantity and variety of calcites from Sweetwater going back to the late 60s.

A really unusual locality among my favourite ones: Helgustadir Mine, Reydarfjörđur, Eastern Region, Iceland. Calcites from North-Atlantic rift basalts.

PostPosted: Aug 24, 2016 09:14    Post subject: Re: Favourite Calcite localities?

In addition to all the CALCITES I have pictured in the USA state of Indiana thread, here are 3 more. All self collected. The common theme of these, besides calcite, is that the crystals nearly fill the central cavity.

DSC03484.jpg
Mineral: Calcite on Quartz, Calcite on Quartz (variety chalcedony), Calcite on Dolomite
 Locality:
Indiana, USA

The left side example is 11cm with a single 9cm calcite. Monroe County
The middle example is 10cm with an 8cm group of calcites. Monroe County
The right side example is 7.5cm with a 4.8cm calcite. Washington County

These were collected in 1977. The miners found the pocket at 8:30am and I came to work at 4:00pm. Fortunately, there were a few left in the bottom of the pocket.

__________
Additional information:

I changed the name of the topic from "Favourite Calcite localities" to "Favourite Calcites". So everyone can feel free not only to discuss his/her favourite localities but also which colours and almost endless forms of that mineral he/she likes the most, e.g. scalenohedrons or rhombohedrons or complex forms, red or white or orange or gray or yellow etc. ...
