PostPosted: Apr 28, 2017 08:16    Post subject: Cause of Blue, Green and Blue/Green Coloration of Cookeite

Is there any analytical work that explains the occasional blue, green, or blue/green coloration of cookeite? More specifically the blue and green cookeite found at this locality:
Stand-on-Your-Head No. 1 Mine, Bland, Saline County, Arkansas, USA?

If there is not any analytical work are there plausible theories?

This locality has also produced some cookeite with similar coloration: Obira Mine, Bungo-Ohno City, Oita Prefecture, Kyushu Region, Japan. I have the same questions regarding this cookeite.

Thanks in advance.

David, I looked up the chemical formula of Cookeite (Al,Li)3Al2(Si,Al)4O10(OH)8 and know that Cookeite is part of the Chlorite Group. Is the cause of the green color in the Cookeite from SOYH the same as what causes Chlorite ((Fe, Mg, Al)6(Si, Al)4O10(OH)8) to look green?

By the way, the so-called "cookeite" that David mentioned from the Obira mine isn't really cookeite. That was just a visual ID a long time ago based on its resemblance to Arkansas cookeite. Analysis showed it to be chamosite.

Thanks for the correction Alfredo. I was going by the ID associated with an image I had seen on FMF.

I'll just break in here.

I like the idea of pronouncing it cookie-ite. Kind of silly I know, but hey, sometimes I think we need more silly. For years I pronounced whewellite as "wee-wellite". Since then I've learned otherwise, but over the phone, people have misconstrued the topic to have jumped to wavellite.

Still, I'm enjoying all of the topics thus far, although I do miss the fadens..

More later,

Ed in Kingman.
