PostPosted: Jun 11, 2017 02:35    Post subject: The Bogota´s French Connection

Hi.

During my last trip to Bogotá I had the occasion and the pleasure of knowing an enormous collector who everybody knows here.

He´s our Fiebre Verde companion, Gérard from Paris (France). We manage to close The French Connection and to begin this way a new gait.

I really enjoy like a big pleasure to share with him more than two hours of “tinto” (a black Colombian coffee), to chat and walk along the Bogotá downtown, included a visit to an emerald center, and to be able to soak up slightly his deep knowledge of these green stones that are Colombia´s emeralds.

This dear gentleman is a Doctor in Colombian beryls. He knows everything about these greens.

I´m so lucky he dominates the Spanish almost the English, though he says his Spanish is "broken" … It is why I didn´t speak to him in my French that is really ruined.

Closely together of our “tinto”, in Bogotá downtown, there was the Emerald Trade Center (E.T.C.), building I was not glad of knowing. It is an all people emerald dedicated mall, not a specialized dealers whole world site.

Like many sites around the country, it is a especially question of very small shops called "bubbles", which sell everything from a bit of crafts with massive emerald, to all sizes of gems and very interesting examples of “gangas” (green crystal/s with its counterfoil).

Enjoy Fiebre Verde, Green Charm with our French-Colombian connection Mr. Gérard.

Firmo.

Many thanks for your appreciation Firmo, I don't know what to say - those are very flattering words and I am not sure I deserve them.

It was a real pleasure to take you for a stroll in the Emerald Trade Center and share a bit about our passion for minerals and specially Colombian beryls.
It's not something I do routinely - lack of candidates!
It probably required more effort to travel from your hotel in Northern Bogota to 'El Centro' than from Medellin to Bogota :-)
The ETC building is definitely worth the visit for those interested to have a glimpse of the local market.
Faceted stones apart, the number of works of art almost exceeds the natural specimens (which, by the way, are not necessarily 100% natural as the beryl crystals are often oiled).
Many shops display natural specimens, anything from low-grade to high-grade 'gangas'.
Occasionally, top-quality specimens can be shown on appointment, always at ridiculous prices. And since prices are very often set in Colombian pesos, we are talking about amounts ranging from tens to hundreds of millions of pesos. Recommendation is to avoid cocktails of tintos and aguardiente before those appointments.

Firmo, hope to share more tintos with you in downtown Bogota and, who knows, we can maybe organize a trip to the mines on one of my next visits.

Gérard

Hi.

Thank you for the pair of tintos. I hope you could pay more…

It will be very fine going together to the Boyacá mines.

We´ll study this travel, of course.

I never thought of taking pictures when wandering inside the Emerald Trade Center. During our visit, we found out that it was actually forbidden to take pictures inside the building.
By the time we were told this by a security agent, Firmo had already a couple of shots stored in his camera. The security agent didn't even bother asking to have them deleted.

The Emerald Trade Center and the International Emerald Museum are the 2 places in Bogota where a visitor can see many 'gangas'. The 2 locations are just one block apart.

Hi.

Yes, … I see a green crystal and the shot is the following.

Security in this country is a very serious theme. But we only shot to the green stones and “we” are geologist, you know.
