Though the emerald crystals are not gemmy and some of them have broken terminations, this specimen is very aesthetic, I like how the crystals are scattered on the piece and how the pyrite adds a contrast with a golden touch ;-)

Glad to know you like this specimen Tobi!
Pyrite aggregates are more often found in the Chivor area than in the Western Belt (Muzo-Coscuez-La Pita).
In the Chivor area, El Oriente and El Acuario, which are just a few hundred meters apart, are the 2 mines where the most spectacular combinations of Emeralds and Pyrite aggregates are found.
I totally share your opinion – I love the aesthetics of this specimen despite the average quality of the beryls (actually the color is much nicer in person!).
But, as you said, what makes it attractive is the balance between the emeralds, the pyrite, and the patches of limonite across the entire piece.
Also, and that’s not a given, all the beryl crystals look pretty much alike color wise.

There is a little story behind this specimen.
It comes from an old find at… the emerald museum in Bogota!
After discussing with the owner of this private museum, I realized that he was actually willing to sell some of the specimens on display.
And this is how I managed to get some “museum pieces” at a very reasonable price.

PostPosted: Jun 08, 2017 13:40    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - La Marina (#6005)

This specimen was self-collected by a friend in the La Marina mine last week.
La Marina is better known for its Euclase and pink Apatite.

La Marina also produces emerald in very small quantity.
Euclase mixes with Apatite but never with Emerald - sometime they are found just a few cm apart.

PostPosted: Jun 09, 2017 16:41    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Lilac Blue Dolomite from Muzo (#6400)

Blue Dolomite is not uncommon in both Emerald belts.
In the Eastern Belt (Piedra de Chulo), the blue dolomite takes the form of grey-blue flattened rhombohedral centimetric crystals.
In the Western Belt (Muzo and La Pita), it takes the form of irregular aggregates and has a very attractive lilac blue cast.

Host rock is a fine-grained black shale.

... not quite Tobi :-)
But I like blue too and was tempted to add that blue dolomite from the Eastern Belt in my collection to create a balance with the Muzo one. Well, another time...

In Piedra de Chulo, the blue dolomite takes the form of grey-blue flattened rhombohedral centimetric crystals.

Oh, by the way, Piedra de Chulo material is often used as host rock for fake specimens.
It's due to the large well-shaped crystals (Dolomite, Calcite, Pyrite) it usually comes with.
I am yet to see blue dolomite and emerald side by side.

Fiebre Verdazul

Had the same kind of horror trip as yours with the Dalnegorsk Sphalerite, trying as many whitish backgrounds as possible, but the resulting color didn't not look right.
No matter the background color, working out the optimal lighting conditions always requires time and patience for these small crystals, at least for me.
