Very very nice magnetite. I had never seen one with such a quality from Laila. I'd like a lot to own one as yours.

Laila is a not very known locality in Baltistan, in the Haramosh mountains area, north of Chamachhu and the famous Stak Nala. The most typical specimens are a rare kind of schorl with a very steep pyramidal tip, the pencil habit as John White named it. The exact location of Laila can be seen at https://carlesmillan.cat/maps/Pakistan.png at a blue pin not far from the geometrical center.

Congratulations!

Thank you for your comments, Carles. It is always a pleasure to hear from you. The label that came with the Magnetite has Lungma Glacier as part of the location information, but I left it out because it was not officially part of the FMF location. I will look your map.

Regards,

Don

Hi, Don

The Chogo Lungma Glacier is about 35 km long. It starts near Laila peak and ends in the head of Basha Valley, which feeds with its waters the more known Shigar Valley. So I think such glacier is not an appropriate locality for minerals. It may not be safe either to state that your magnetite has been found in Laila. A recurrent problem with the minerals from Baltistan.

Anyway it keeps being an excellent specimen, although pending to investigate where it came from.

Hello Carles,

Thank you for the additional information regarding The Chogo Lungma Glacier. When the location of the exact site that a mineral specimen was mined, picked up off the ground, etc is cited, I guess the precise GPS coordinates is the most accurate. Most specimens in my collection have a mine or someone's farm or property, nearest city, county, state, country. Is the Chogo Lungma Glacier one that advances and retreats periodically?

Don

Maybe. But I don't know. We're talking about the Himalayas, not the Alps.

Carles,

Attached are the three labels that came with this Magnetite specimen that I acquired last year. I couldn't find any reference to the Lungma Glacier in My Junior Wood Chuck Manual so I am going to send pictures of the labels.

I am willing to bet that Herb Obodda knew where he was when he acquired this Magnetite specimen because I believe Herb has been to Pakistan several times. Dave Wilber was with him on at least one occasion according to my Bible, What's Hot in Tucson. I have no reason whatsoever to doubt Herb Obodda's word.

I also trust the dealer I bought the specimen from. Rob is no slouch when it comes to minerals and their localities.
Why would further investigation be necessary?

I have another story about mineral specimens and their localities but it is getting late here so I will post it on a later date.

Regards,

Don

The glacier starts its way just North East of Laila peak and becomes a river about 10 km before Arondu, as you can see on this map. That summit being an area rather than a locality, all the specimens from the vicinity, no matter the exact point of collection, are usually labelled with Laila, Laila Base Camp or alike. I think, therefore, no further investigation is needed.

Herb Obodda has not travelled several times to Pakistan. He did it many times, so we can fully trust his opinion.

Thank you, Pierre. They remind me of the sandwich looking Andes chocolates with the mint flavor, only different colors.

I very much respect your reverence for Riana's parents.

Hi to Riana.

Don
