Always a nice show with only minerals, and particularly alpine minerals.
a dream place for quartz devotees.

When we buy quartz and fluorite from Chamonix, never forget that it comes from this place, at great danger and efforts

PostPosted: Aug 08, 2017 03:14    Post subject: Re: Chamonix show fifty years

Thank you guys,
The main places for quartz and fluorite collecting are not directly on the Mont Blanc itself
but on the peaks surrounding the different icefields in the north and north east of the Mont Blanc.

The climate change is visible everywhere, with the icefields declining; but it helps Cristallier to find new places for crystals.

Here are some more photos of the landscape taken from the Aiguille du Midi (3870m) that can be reached hopefully by the cable car.

Thanks for showing this video! I also like this one:

Perhaps some cristallier can answer- when making a descent on a rope, how do you retrieve your rope from its anchor once you reach the end? These people are truly intrepid.

Perhaps some cristallier can answer- when making a descent on a rope, how do you retrieve your rope from its anchor once you reach the end? These people are truly intrepid.

You find an anchor point, either a bolt anchor with a rappel ring, a natural feature like a tree or small spire of rock, to sling a nylon webbing loop around, or least desirable, leave a piece of climbing protection with a carabiner. In any case you thread an end of the rope thru the ring, around the tree, what have you, to the halfway point. Tie a knot in the free ends and toss the rope down. Hook your rappel device to your harness and rope and off you go. When you reach the next rappel point, anchor in, unhook the rope from your device, untie the knot and pull one end of your rope thru the top anchors and down it comes. Providing it doesn't get hung up in a crack or something, repeat the process. If it does get hung up, much swearing and ranting follow and- well that's another story. You can only rappel half the length of your rope because it's doubled up. That's the long way of saying, knowing your ropecraft before you ascend is a must. Hope this helps.
