PostPosted: Sep 21, 2017 18:10    Post subject: Need help identifying this rock

Hello, I have had this rock since I was a child. 35 now. It was apart of my mom's rock collection, so it could have come from Africa, south America or in the u.s. it's heavy for it's size, 302 grams and has quartz with black veins mixed in. Under a 40x microscope I can see a few deep blue crystals. Some of the quartz has some purple in it, but not much. I'm not too familiar with geology, so I'm sorry if my description seems shotty. Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated.

From your last picture, the 2 examples on the left appear to be gypsum, with the top example showing signs of secondary water or sand corrosion. Sometimes better preserved examples of these are called a "desert rose".
The 3 bluish/pinkish examples on the right are pieces of chalcedony or chert or flint varieties of microcrystalline quartz. BOB

The "desert rose" specimen could also be a barite from Oklahoma.

The three pieces on the right are petrified wood. Someone said they are lapidary grade.

Petrified wood is usually silicified wood so a small piece being called chalcedony or flint etc still seems correct in my mind.

I don't comment on lapidary subjects. BOB

I have no idea what lapidary means. Someone just told me that. The wood is black, clear and red. Pretty cool looking.

I can not see any cell structure in your "petrified wood". So, why do you think it is? For me it is chalcedony. From where are the pieces? This would probably help.

I agree - looks like flint/chalcedony to me
