PostPosted: Jan 16, 2014 07:04    Post subject: A mineralogical trip through Germany / Hessen - Hesse

This Land in the middle of Germany has only a few known or significant mineral occurrences, for example the giant salt deposits in the east near the border with Thuringia. The most interesting areas for collectors are the Taunus Mountains in the southwest and some nearby former mining areas where some really fine collector’s specimen were found.

Some locations kind of faded away over the years. Once famous, almost forgotten in present days - to find specimens from those places and to know what it is makes mineral collecting so thrilling for me. A good example are the epidote crystals from Sulzbach in the Odenwald, Hesse. I think there are not so many places in Germany where such epidotes were found, nevertheless, I bet if you would ask 10 German collectors for classic German epidote occurences, Sulzbach/Hesse wouldn´t be mentioned...

The coal mines around Kassel were known for gypsum crystals. The Neuenhain open pit near Borken, for example, is a famous locale for that mineral.

The Mineralogical Museum of Marburg opened a new special exhibition "A mineralogical journey through Hesse" some days ago. I visited it today, here's the little "show report" with photos of some remarkable specimens:
