In Bulgaria also there are very beautiful calcites. This is my recent find - calcite druse and single crystals. They are from Sliven, but the most interesting crystals are found in the Eastern Rhodopes and Burgas.

A great and very aesthetic Tsumeb specimen, Heimo, as always :-)
And Bob, what a fantastic colour contrast with the blue chalcedony, really nice!

PostPosted: Sep 13, 2017 10:04    Post subject: Re: Favourite Calcites?

I just read the LAPIS extra issue about calcite (from 1998) which features a "top ten" ranking of calcite localities. The experienced mineral experts Helmut Brückner, Dr. Ulrich Burchard, Herb Obboda, Christian Weise, Dr. Hans-Jürgen Wilke, Victor Yount and Walter Hess were asked which they would call the "top ten". According to their answers, this was the ranking (don't forget it was made 20 years ago, so no wonder that there are no certain Chinese mines, only "China". Also, the list only says "India" and "Mexico" without any details):

1. Cumberland, UK
2. Tennessee, U.S.
3. Sankt Andreasberg, Harz Mts., Germany
4. Dal'negorsk, Russia
5. Mexico
6. Tsumeb, Namibia
7. India
8. China
9. Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany
10. Michigan, U.S.

After seeing Ed's collection of Viburnum Trend calcites in outstanding quality

I think I should add ALL calcites from Viburnum Trend to my favourites :-)

Some large and very fine calcites were collected in the Meshberger Stone Quarry in the 1950s thru the early 1970s. This example was collected in the early 1970s

I guess this specimen could also go in the "favorite fluorite" section, but I think the Calcite is the star of the show here. This specimen is from Illinois, Denton mine and the Bahama Pod. It measures 6x5x5 cm with a very gemmy amber/orange perfect calcite perched on dark purple fluorite.

Like looking into a small window, this 10.0 cm x 8.5 cm very unusual flat sided geode has a cavity hosting a 3.8 cm complex terminated calcite nestled in dolomite groupings and surrounding quartz. Self collected about 2006.
One dealer/collector has pleaded with me to acquire it every time he sees it in a display.
