For decades fluorite specimens similar to the one pictured below have been collected from numerous limestone and dolostone quarries in the northwest portion of Ohio and adjacent areas in Michigan and Indiana. The quarries are located in a geologic feature known as the Findlay Arch. In the most recent issue (Vol. 93, No.2) of Rocks and Minerals, there is a very good article about this area, describing many of the quarries, their history, and fluorite occurrences.

Fluorite - White Rock Quarry, Clay Center, Ohio.jpg

White Rock Quarry, Clay Center, Ottawa County, Ohio, USA

 Description:
Lustrous cubic fluorite crystals to 1.0 cm with colorless transparent rims and root beer-colored interiors associated with minor pale blue celestine on a limestone matrix. Collected in the early 1960s.

Mullica Hill, New Jersey is a well-known location for vivianite replacing the casts of various fossils. The cigar-shaped casts of the fossil gastropod Belemnitella americana occur as crystallized dark green vivianite enclosed within a brown rind of iron-stained sandstone.

Many quarry operations seem to change hands which can sometimes cause a bit of confusion among all but local collectors. This calcite was collected when the locality was known as the Delta Carbonate Quarry. Over the years it has also been known as the Roosevelt Avenue Quarry, Roosevelt Quarry, and York Stone Quarry. Currently, it's official name is the York Building Supply Quarry.

Not to store up a hornets nest but would not the correct location be "Delta Carbonate Quarry" since that is when it was when collected. I like to keep the history of my specimens intact with what the location was when they were collected not what the location is called today.

Actually my catalog entry and label for this piece notes the location as Delta Carbonate Quarry. I simply posted it under the current name of the quarry because that is how it is listed in the database.

Easy to fix it! 😊 Now is: "York Building Supply Quarry (Delta Carbonate Quarry)"

In fact the name Delta Carbonate Quarry already was in our data base but not visible for display, only for search, so considering the popularity of the "Delta Carbonate Quarry" we made it visible (inside brackets) together with the official name.

Another sphalerite. This specimen and the previous piece were part of two flats of Elmwood sphalerite that I picked up in 1987 for a ridiculously cheap price. Over the years I traded many of the pieces, but held on to these two for the collection.
