PostPosted: Jan 23, 2019 10:02    Post subject: Re: Collection of Michael Shaw

I have had this piece in my collection for 57 years. It was my first copper specimen and it spurred my more than casual interest in native coppers from Michigan's UP. The piece was lacquered when I purchased it for $6 from Alvin Schortmann at his shop in Easthampton, Massachusetts. I once considered removing the coating, but decided to leave it as Alvin had prepared it. A visit to Schortmann's shop was a magical experience for a young mineral collector.

For me an especially interesting bit of history, for I too have minerals from Schortmann's minerals. (on their original label, the name was spelled with 2 "nn"s). Their store was at 6 and 10 McKinley Avenue in Easthampton, Mass.
The box of 12 mineral chips was labeled "US #6 Minerals".

I have it photographed, but am reluctant to add that picture onto your collection thread. BOB

You are absolutely correct Bob. Thanks for catching my mistake. There were 2 Schortmann brothers - Alvin and Raymond. When I visited their shop, it was located on 6 McKinley Avenue in Easthampton and all of my labels have the 6 McKinley Avenue address.

Here's another piece I purchased for $1 on the same visit and the label that accompanied it. Notice the spelling of the Ojuela Mine.
