PostPosted: Jan 20, 2021 19:28    Post subject: Mysterious Red Pyramids in Mexican opal

Any idea what these pyramid structures that formed in opal are?

Video here:

I am new to forum but will try to attach pictures too.

Any insight/comments appreciated much. Thank you.

Mexican opal????? Certainly interesting, but usually when it is "too good to be true, it usually is".

Unless a Mexican expert like Peter Megaw can vouch that the specimen is natural and genuine, I favor it being glass or hard clear plastic with inclusions, then facetted and polished.
To my untrained eye, it is not natural. BOB

The red parts look hexagonal, so perhaps the tips of hematoidal quartz crystals? There is a lot of that where I was recently living in Catalonia.

Hi to everybody!
Rutile and hematite inclusions are not to be excluded as well! Some opals contain these minerals as inclusion as well!

Thank you for your response! This specimen is from a top opal dealer from Mexico (close to Magdalena). He has sold opals for a long time and has never seen this before. It is real, but I understand your comment and do appreciate it. I tried to post a link from his original post but the spam filter rejected it; appending an exclamation mark after the www.? Anyway, thanks again and cheers from the Adirondacks!

I agree with Bob that this could be artificial, some hard epoxy or the like.
You should get it tested.
Specific weight would help.
