What a beautiful specimen, really lovely! But this would be the front side for me, not the back ;-)

2738 Calcite - Boldut Mine, Cavnic, Maramures, Romania.jpg
 Mineral: Calcite
 Locality:
Boldut Mine, Cavnic mining area, Cavnic, Maramures, Romania
 Dimensions: 17.0 x 9.0 x 5.0 cm
 Description:
Druzy snow white calcite forming interesting pseudomorphs of what I believe were stibnite crystals. There are no remnants left of the previous mineral except for small holes in the bottom of the crystals where the calcite did not completely fill in. The larger crystal has an interesting bend which might be related to the often seen kinks in crystals of stibnite.

Thanks Tobi,

If indeed these were stibnite crystals, I would have liked to see them before they were replaced with calcite. I think they would have been awesome :>)

Here's another piece from Romania.

Thank you Tobi. I hope you and your family are doing well.

Maybe you can help by translating the bottom part of the label. Google translate does not make much sense.

Sure:
Staatl. Mineralien-Niederlage Freiberg, Sa. = State Mineral Dealership Freiberg, Saxony
(Niederlage is a word both for a dealership and a defeat. There's no use of the word for a dealership in German today, so modern translators often translate the word Mineralien-Niederlage to mineral defeat - which of course makes not much sense ;-)

Hope I could help!
Regards & stay well

Yes, Niederlage translated as defeat, which I could not figure out. Now it makes sense. Thank you my friend.

PostPosted: Feb 11, 2021 10:08    Post subject: Re: Collection of Michael Shaw

With Tobi's help on the translation of the label and further research via the Mineralogical Record label archive, I was surprised to find out the Tsumeb calcite is a bit older than I thought. The wording on the label dates it to sometime after 1918, and the label is almost certainly in the the handwriting of Otto F. Edelmann, who was Administrator of the Freiburg Academy from 1920-1952. Another label that accompanies the specimen indicates the piece was obtained by M. Backmann of Dresden in 1979 from Dr. Fritz Hofmann, who was the Director of the Academy from 1972-1996. I'm very happy to have been able to add this additional provenance to the specimen.
