A large cabinet specimen of interlocking cubic crystals of Galena associated with Calcite. The luster of the Galena is outstanding – mirror like in fact. Some of the Galena crystals show corner modifications while others have dimpled and speckled surfaces.

Very heavy specimen at over 2 kilograms.

Does it do stacking? (with a compatible lens)

It says 'focus bracketing' - does that mean stacking?

Hello James:

I do believe it does photo stacking. From what my partner and I have seen on several you tube videos the ‘focus bracketing function’ allows you to shift the focus from the near field to the far field. You can set the number of photos the camera can take but the camera will determine the total number needed to achieve focus. By this I mean if you set 50 shots the camera may stop after 15.

The feature may seem ‘gimmicky’ to some folks but it has a niche application in product photography, especially photographing minerals. It is for this reason, among others too, that our children bought the camera for us.

If you would like to see the real experts using focus bracketing I can send the links.

Our children (I have four – a daughter and three sons) decided to surprise my partner (their father) and I with a wonderful gift – a new camera. So we now have a brand new Canon EOS R6 Mark II with a really professional tripod and five new Lens kits. Though I liked the old Nikon Coolpix A100, our children always called it a toy camera. We are really excited about the new camera.

PostPosted: Aug 02, 2022 18:31    Post subject: Cuprite - Minerals of the Rubtsovsk Mine - Silvia's Collection

A cluster of well-formed Cuprite crystals from the Rubtsovsk mine showing sharp edges with a pleasing metallic luster - hint of blue. The largest crystal is 22 mm on edge. In bright light some of the smaller crystals display deep red tones. If the crystals transmit red light, the reflected light occurs at the blue end of the spectrum – hence hints of blue.

Prior to photographing my partner and I washed the specimen as Cuprite from this locality seems to develop a very thin layer of what might be hydroxy-copper oxide.

PostPosted: Aug 09, 2022 16:13    Post subject: My Kidney - Silvia's Collection

I consider this specimen to be a shapely hematite "kidney ore" from Cumbria. I have not seen too many Kidney ore specimens from the Goose Green mine. Most come from the Florence mine, a locality that also produced excellent Baryte, Calcite, Dolomite, Fluorite and Quartz specimens. This Goose Green specimen has lustrous, rich deep-red ‘bubbly’ botryoids with a small quantity of specular hematite on the back of the specimen.

The photos were taken with the Canon EOS M6 Mark II. The lens used was the Canon EFM 28mm f/3.5 macro using the standard macro setting on the lens body (not super macro). The photos were processed using the Canon Digital Photo Professional V4 software. The depth compositing option was used. Some 20 photographs to be taken, focusing on various points of the specimen.

We are really happy with the camera. It enables us to take really high resolution photos that can easily be printed, without loss of clarity, on A4 size glossy paper. Some might even be worth printing in poster size. The Nikon Coolpix A100 took some very nice photos, but on enlargement they looked too grainy for A4 size photos.

Found a video about this stacking/bracketing and it does seem useful. 'Focus bracketing' was a new term to me. I use Canon but would need a new body and lens to use the feature.

Hello James:

Many thanks for the link.

At the moment we are still learning to use all the features of the camera. We have only experimented with the super macro function. For really close-up photos with magnification we use a digital microscope with a long focal length, and we stack the photos (anywhere from 20 to 100 shots per subject) with Helicon Focus. We consider it very important to have all aspects of the photo in focus – background, subject and foreground. It is for this reason that we avoid using a standard non-digital optical microscope – you can get some fantastic photos but the background is always out of focus.

Our children also included a focusing rail with the camera package gift, and I have included a photo. My partner is in the process of modifying and improving it, and he may also do a total rebuild or create a new component. He thinks the gear racks need replacing with better and smoother versions. He is also looking into a design using a micrometer to adjust the focus as this will enable much finer adjustment (0.1mm or less) when subjects are really close.

If it is fine we could include more photos of the development of our camera studio.

We are also very busy setting up a private Science Museum as we have thousands of pieces covering geology, mineralogy, mining and many other related fields. Our children say our home already looks like a museum so what is there to set up?

PostPosted: Aug 15, 2022 14:24    Post subject: Panasqueira minerals and panasqueira art - Silvia's Collection

We do not normally purchase thumbnail size mineral specimens, but my partner had ulterior motives – he intends to mount the piece in a 18K gold necklace for me. When complete I will upload a few photos of my new Panasqueira jewellery.

Despite its small size, it does contain some choice lustrous black crystals of Cassiterite to 15mm associated with minor Pyrite and minor Muscovite. Some of the Cassiterite crystals display internal red flashes. The specimen is in great condition – a fine thumbnail example from the famous Panasqueira mine – soon to be part of my jewellery collection.

 Description:
I was so impressed with the water color paintings I have seen that I was considering trying to paint too. My daughter told me that it is very easy to do this sort of work with software – ‘in silico’ – so no paints or brushes are needed. She is buying me some specialized software so that I can produce ‘in-silico’ water colour (and oil paintings too) renderings of my minerals with minimal effort. The renderings created by the software that I have seen so far are outstanding – the ‘in silico’ productions are really nice.

My first ‘in silico’ oil painting on ‘in-silico’ canvas. Perhaps not as good as an artist could do but it only took me 10 minutes. With the new software my daughter is purchasing, the results should be much better. When printed on high quality paper and appropriately framed, the result will look nice.

We are also looking at creating photos, posters, t-shirts, and perhaps having them screen-printed on quality canvas.

I will not put copyright restrictions on my productions – they are free to use for all non-commercial purposes provided full credit is given. We do not need the money – we enjoy doing it so all may benefit.

PostPosted: Aug 18, 2022 13:37    Post subject: Malachite after Azurite (?) - Silvia's Collection

The sharp, tabular rhombohedral habit of the original Azurites has been preserved superbly by the Malachite, to the point that you can see each edge and variation in the original crystal. The Malachite has deep forest-green chatoyant luster (wet look in places) and color that is so aesthetic and desired.

Large lustrous yellow-metallic Pyrite crystals to 60 mm surrounded by a crystallized mass of bladed black-metallic specular Hematite crystals to 10 mm.

I love the Hematite and Pyrite specimens from Elba. Elba is one of the most beautiful places on earth – a true gem in every essence of the word.
