And because I like large fluorites:
Mineral: | Fluorite, chalcopyrite |
Locality: | Weardale, North Pennines Orefield, County Durham, England / United Kingdom | |
|
Dimensions: | Specimen size 24 x 16 cm, largest crystal 11 cm |
Description: |
Massive fluorite cluster from Weardale, I don't know the exact mine, I guess maybe Boltsburn or Blackdene ... |

Boltsburn is a possibility, but I've seen things like that from a number of mines in the area, so hard to say for sure. We even found things like that in the Rogerley on occasion.

silvia wrote: | That is one giant Fluorite specimen and a great looking piece too. | Thank you Silvia. Sure, there are some imperfections on such large fluorites, hard to avoid that on such a rather fragile material in that size. But I fell in love with it because it is from a classic European mining area, because it is a very impressive and showy specimen and because there are just so many details all around it. There are many small chalcopyrites, I think even some very small quartzes and siderites (I need to clean it and to take a loupe for a closer look); I also love that kind of "Weardale style" with the pale yellow/white zones inside of the purple fluorites. And I just like the overall look of it, that massive cluster of intergrown fluorite crystals with so many details and different zones, partially coated with other minerals. A highlight for me as a fluorite fan :-)

Though I have some knowledge on Weardale fluorites and did some research, I came to the same result: Boltsburn seems to be possible, but there are several other mines where this style of fluorite was found. I think the presence of chalcopyrite excludes some mines but there are still several possibilities. So I just leave the locality information "Weardale".

If there is chalcopyrite present, it does suggest Blackdene as it is more common from that mine than others. But overall, Weardale purple fluorites like that are difficult to locate without some historical information as to when it may have been found. They came from a lot of mines!

I had a surprising and wonderful moment yesterday:
In April 2021 I posted a fluorite/calcite specimen from Xianghualing/Xianghuapu that I added to my collection: https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=75085#75085
Until now, I never had a specimen in my collection that was published in a book or magazine ... a few days ago I purchased the quite new book China 2 by Berthold Ottens, a major reference book about Chinese minerals ... and while I was browsing the book with its many wonderful photos of localities and minerals, I discovered that MY fluorite specimen is pictured there as one of the pieces of the Xianghualing/Xianghuapu area!
Just wanted to share this because it was a wonderful surprise, really proud and happy to discover that one of my collection specimens is published in such a prominent book :-)
(Btw, I can highly recommend both of Berthold's China books!)
Regards
Tobi

Congratulations, Tobi.
I bought that book three months ago but couldn't identify the specimen as yours. Actually a piece of museum size and quality.
And yes, it's an excellent book.

Thank you guys. The specimen was published before it was in my collection and so my name is not mentioned, nonetheless I'm happy and proud to have a specimen that is part of such a great book by Berthold Ottens!
