Thank you, Tobi. It's a small specimen, but as I understand it, the larger crystals tended to be included with a variety of oxides and sulfides causing them to be various shades of brown to black.

Thanks for the additional information. The crystals remind me of those from Châtel-Guyon in France, I once had a specimen from there which was very similiar to your piece from Magma Mine.

Tobi,

I wasn't familiar with The French location of Chatel-Guyon, so I looked it up on Mindat and yes, the crystals are remarkably similar in color and morphology. Thanks for pointing out this new (to me) location.

Regards,
Michael

I first became aware of these Newfoundland amethyst specimens at the 2020 Tucson Show. After looking through hundreds of specimens I was unable to find an undamaged piece. I'm told this was because the deposit was mined with mechanical equipment resulting in specimens with quite a lot of damage. I forgot about these until I spied a couple of flats at the 2022 Denver Show. To my surprise, most of the pieces were damage free, so I had a second chance to select a few for the collection.

Thank you, Tobi. Where we live there is not a great variety of minerals to be collected, but there is no shortage of Gypsum. I have collected Gypsum specimens from 5 or 6 localities in Oklahoma, and the habits are quite distinct. Years ago, I focused somewhat on building a suite of Gypsum from around the world since it was ubiquitous and relatively inexpensive. That suite now includes 83 Gypsum specimens from 52 different localities. It was fun building that suite, and I have used it several times for various programs and displays. Occasionally, I will come across a Gypsum specimen from a locality that is not represented in the collection, and I will add another piece to the suite.
