Michigan also has some less-well-known mineral occurrences in the Upper Peninsula, including pegmatites and gold deposits.

Northwestern Ohio (also in the Michigan Basin) has also produced some wonderful
calcite, fluorite, celestine, and sphalerite specimens. Many are quite large.

The curator spent a lot of time over Christmas and New Year's break working on the systematic collection. I always love when George works on the systematic collection, as I never know what surprises I'll find in the cases! The exhibits are not yet done with labeling,
graphics and final specimen placement, but I couldn't wait.

Here are a few cases of oxide minerals.

Elements-
Many of the elements have been put on exhibit now (excluding gold and silver). Here are a few of my favorites.

Hi to everybody!
I saw the graphite specimens from Merelani Tanzania. On the specimen shown on the right side I saw some beautiful and interesting green crystals. What mineral is it? Calcite too or...? I don't think it is just calcite and nothing else! But those crystals are very nice!
Greetings from Italy by Riccardo.

Hi Riccardo,
I'm sorry I forgot to include the details about the Merelani specimen.
The primary mineral of interest is gemmy diopside. You can see a close up of the
diopside crystals on an earlier page of this thread. The white crystals are mesolite with laumontite (verified by Raman and EDS). The pocket that produced these specimens
also contains gem-quality tremolite, pale zoisite, and lovely pale blue apatite; as well as small crystals of pyrite, siderite, chabazite, and gypsum. Surprisingly- no calcite.

A wonderful report, thank you! I was really surprised about the beauty- and colourful sulfurs from Michigan:

Never heard of them before. They could be from Sicily, really nice stuff!
