By June 7 the south wall cases all have their doors installed. The entrance gallery has its large screen monitor installed (gift of the A. E. Seaman family) for short a visitor orientation and other programs.

June 9 also saw the pouring of the foundation for the museum's new storage building on the east side of the building.

A crew of students has been on hand helping to put the Lane storage cabinets into place. Here they are working on June 10 with curator Dr. George Robinson.

On June 10 the foundation was all cured and the outbuilding's trusses were delivered (fun to watch).

It was an exciting day on June 13. The large portrait of Douglas Houghton, first Michigan state geologist and namesake for the city of Houghton, was unpacked and hung in the gallery. His survey work is credited with sparking Michigan's copper mining boom. Unfortunately he drowned in Lake Superior near Eagle Harbor, MI during a storm while working on a geological survey.

By June 13 the storage/work room has all of the Lane storage cabinets arranged. Dr. Robinson's wife Susan, also a well-known artist, has been a tremendous help in both the packing process, and now in the unpacking process.

I am clearly biased by my interest in the Copper Country and by many unusually pleasurable days spent there on vacations but please continue to document progress of the move. Excited to see a new home for an outstanding mineral collection that documents the mining districts of the Lake Superior Region with love and a flare for both scientific and historical legacy.

Given recent declines in support for natural history collections this is a breath of fresh air.

Thanks for the pictures John. The museum looks great and it's good to see Douglas Houghton's portrait with a little more light on it!

Lots happened in the museum on June 14 and 15! Many of the "floor cases", designed by former curator Jean Kemp, and prominently displaying the collection in the EERC building since the mid 1970s, were places into position forming spaces for the "Keweenaw Gallery" and the "Iron District Gallery" for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan minerals.

I said it several times before, but again, thanks so much John to give us the gift to follow the rebuilding, starting from zero, of one of the world's best Museums. A really exciting experience and a great pleasure.

Thanks John!

I echo what Jordi has written, John. Watching the evolution of this great new museum has been an exciting experience. Can't thank you enough for the job you have done in sharing all of this with FMF.

Thanks all for the encouragement. I pass it on to the museum staff and they appreciate it!

Summer is wonderful in Copper Country. Today's lovely weather reminded me of the swap on the grounds of the famous Quincy Mine Hoist last year in early August during the Copper Country Mineral Retreat. Check out

(link normalized by FMF)
for information about this year's retreat. The museum will be PARTLY open by then.

Work has progressed rapidly on the storage building. We're pleased because we need to move things into it to make room for the rest of the display cases to be installed inside the gallery.
