I have just spent my holidays reading a new book about the Agates of Scotland. If you want to find out about these polished specimens this is a good starting point as it covers their origin, localities, collectors and how to prepare them. I found it a very entertaining read but then I do know Scotland well (but do not collect agates!).

Looks very nice! I've heard about Scottish agates (and about Matthew Heddle) several times, thanks to Edinburgh curator Brian Jackson giving talks and bringing displays of them. I'll hope to see someone in Tucson with copies to sell of this book, so I can pick up a copy.

The photos are great, although maybe a little small but that way you get to see the amazing variety found in such a small country. I hope someone will have copies at Tucson, but you could always check with the authors.

I heard Brian Jackson's excellent lecture on Scotland's agates at the agate symposium held at the Colorado School of Mines a few years back. In response to a listener's question about the legality of collecting agates on farmland in Scotland, Brian answered that, theoretically, all scottish agates belonged to one woman, Betsie Windsor, but as she was not a mineral collector herself she didn't really mind much if other people picked them up. It took me a few seconds to recognize who Betsie Windsor is.

I'm glad you clarified that yourself, Alfredo, because I hadn't yet figured that out, till I read down to the end of your post. I must say, I did not remember Brian saying that, but now, it'll be forever in my memory!
