Here are some very good read, in french language:

'La grande encyclopedie des mineraux' , by Rudolf Duda and Lubos Rejl , publication Grund.
It's a big picture illustrated book that compiles reference data for mineral identification. Not only physical properties, but also some chemical properties (fusibility, flame test reactions, solubility..) and other useful data.

Let's note that Grund publications also feature 'La grande encyclopedie des fossiles'

'Les mineraux leurs gisements, leurs association' , by Pierre Bariand, Fabien Cesbron and Jacques Geffroy. There are three volumes, which were published as three special-issues by the french mineralogical journal 'Mineraux & Fossiles'
It's a great work with excellent presentation of a very large number of minerals (notably habit/morphology, geological settings, worldwide occurences...). Not many illustrations, but still very valuable data.

'Debuter et faire progresser une collection de mineraux' which is also a special-issue of the french mineralogical journal 'Mineraux & Fossiles'
This is an excellent general introduction to mineralogy and collecting, with many illustrations and tons of good advices that will be of great help to the beginners, and still definately a good read to initiate collectors.

'Quel est ce mineral?' by Jean-claude Berthelay, publication CRDP auvergne.
Unfortunately not published anymore!
This is a book describing detailed procedures for qualitative chemical analysis (both wet and dry analysis) specifically applied to mineral identification.
