Limonite Stalagmite

This Limonite specimen is perhaps the most unusual piece that I have acquired in the last few months. It comprises a long “stalagmite” of highly lustrous and bubbly limonite with a beautiful chocolate brown colour. The piece is a solid specimen - not limonite encrusting another mineral. It is 2.5 cm wide at the bottom and 4 cm wide at the top. I have also included a macro photograph of top of the piece. The stand as can be seen is just an acrylic block – about as simple as they get!

PostPosted: May 07, 2012 02:16    Post subject: Bright Orange Orpiment

Orpiment

In my opinion, Peru still provides some of the finest examples of Orpiment in the world. The one shown below is a classic aggregate of Orpiment crystals from the Quiruvilca mine that I acquired recently. The crystals are sharp, striated, translucent and a very vivid orange. The largest crystal is about 3 x 1 cm. Photographed in “macro” using natural light.

PostPosted: May 09, 2012 02:55    Post subject: Arsenopyrite on Magnetite Inner Mongolia

Arsenopyrite on Magnetite

In my opinion, Inner Mongolian Arsenopyrite is among the best in the world. The specimen featured below contains some fine Arsenopyrite on a matrix of coarse-grained Magnetite with Quartz. The Arsenopyrites occur as mirror bright highly lustrous clusters and two give the appearance of fins on both the left and right hand side of the specimen. These groups are 6 x 4 cm and 5 x 5 cm respectively. The large cluster in the middle is 8 x 6 x 6 cm. There is a smaller “fin” of Arsenopyrite behind this cluster as the second photo shows. This is about 8 x 1.5 cm. The specimen also features some well-formed Magnetite crystals, which occur as rhombic-dodecahedrons with a lovely silky luster. There is also some minor Dolomite association too. This piece was acquired through a wholesaler in Mainland China and arrived yesterday by EMS.
