A very representative specimen of pyromorphite from China with crystals to 5mm. The colour contrasts very nicely with the white matrix.

Joseph:

You have a very nice collection. We have a few things in common - 300 piece collection, but imagine it will grow much, much larger given time.

A spike ball of marcasite from the Belle Fourche Reservoir in South Dakota. This is a self collected piece and comes from a shale formation that is submerged for most of the year. In the Fall, when the water is drawn down, the shale layer is exposed and you can collect the marcasite by walking along the beach.

Some of these spike balls appear to be a pseudo morph of marcasite after pyrite.

PostPosted: Jun 02, 2012 10:32    Post subject: Re: Collection of Joseph D'Oliveira

It has been a while since I have posted any new mineral specimens but Spring is a busy time of year. I recently made a trip to the Cobalt-Gowganda area here in Ontario, a very prominent silver producing area from the late 1800's to the 1970's. For the time being all of the mines have been abandoned but numerous waste piles of rock are left for the collector to poke through.

Most of the easy silver has been collected from the surface but a metal detector and a pick and shovel are all that is needed to discover a few nice specimens on a days outing. The following specimens are all from the Cobalt-Gowganda area, some are self collected and some have been purchased from other collectors.

A recently collected specimen of native copper crystals in calcite from the Copper Creek Mine, Batchawana Bay area, near Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada. The copper crystals are free floating in the calcite.

The specimen was found in a creek bottom using a metal detector, it was then lightly etched with acid to remove oxidation and expose the copper crystals.

Large almandine garnet collected from a small pocket within a biotite schist. These large garnets are common in the area and typically display pitted faces from contact with the biotite within the schist. This specimen has seven good crystal faces and then typically is more rounded on the contact side.

Thanks Michael,
Occasionally we find a treasure when we etch the silver from calcite vein material. There are literally hundreds of mines in the Cobalt area with old waste piles, most have little silver but every once in a while you find one that makes all of the other trips worthwhile.

Here are a couple of new additions to my collection that I recently picked up in Tucson.

 Description:
Vanadinite
ACF Mine, Mibladen, Morocco
8.5x6x2.5 cm
This Vanadite is different from the usual Mibladen Vanadinite specimens commonly found on the market. There was one dealer that had these specimens and he said it was from a recent small find at the ACF Mine. The crystals are barrel shaped with a unique darker core, giving them a banded appearance. I had thought they might be Arsenian Vanadinite (Endlichite) but analysis showed very little arsenic when I had it tested. Still a very interesting addition.

 Description:
Arsenopyrite on Löllingite
Huanggang Mines, Chifeng, Inner Mongolia, China
12x10x7.5 cm
One of the many rare combinations from the Mongolian locality. This specimen shows better in person than when photographed. It was almost completely covered with a thin coating of chlorite under a combination of druzy quartz and calcite. this is the result of 10 hours in a mild acid bath to remove the calcite, 2 hours in the ultrasonic cleaner, 3 hours of hands on picking with a dental pick and brushing with a toothbrush, combined with a lot of high pressure water blasting to get to this point. I'll probably invest another 4-6 hours to finish the cleaning so that the specimen can truly present itself properly.
