PostPosted: Mar 21, 2012 07:57    Post subject: Mineralogical Museum of Marburg - some 2012 impressions

Just came back from a trip with pupils from our school to the Marburg Museum. I thought it could be interesting to share some of the impressions here with you (including specimens from the stunning Harz Mountains exhibition).
Please excuse if locality informations are not exactly, if the sizes are only approximately and if some pictures are fuzzy. But i hope you enjoy these minerals nevertheless!

Thank you for your great reportages about the Marburg Museum.

BTW, searching in the Forum I wrote the word "Marburg" and I found several threads started for you about this Museum, so I supposed that it could better if I unify all these different threads in one single thread named: "Mineralogical Museum of Marburg" where everybody could have a more complete vision, instead several separate visions.

What do you think Tobias?

If you want to unify them, don't hesitate - you're the boss ;-) No, really: Why not? Most of them had several topics, but one large thread would not be wrong i think ...

Finally, three stunning specimens of galena from Neudorf, Harz Mountains, Germany - one of the most famous German mineral classics. The third specimen is so incredible, i couldn't find words when i stood in front of it. Just look at the size, no further comment!!!

Thank you Tobias. It is interesting to see that this museum apparently is adding relatively new material, such as the fluorite from China. I hope they have an acquisitions budget, or are they exchanging for the newer pieces?

I suppose the museum would like to have a larger budget, but as a faculty of a university they can't splurge too much money ;-)

Many of the newer specimens were donated by the supporters club of the museum, where i am a member. They use their money to acquire some really good specimens from time to time. And then there are a lot of wealthy private collectors with significant collections who sometimes donate minerals, either from their own collections, or they buy them for the museum's inventory.

But the giant galena above (i can't even fantasize about the value of it) is not property of our museum, it is on loan from a mining museum in Dresden, Saxony.

Hi Tobi,

Thanks for the photos. I would really like to have one of the three specimens above in my collection ;-).

Astonihing galenas as well as fluorapatites and German fluorites. And your pictures are quite good taking into account the circumstances. Thanks, Tobias!!!!!

Cheers

I inspected the threads related with the Marburg Museum and it looks to me that it don't will appear coherent if I unify all them.

I have something in mind about to group in separate single threads all posts published in FMF related with the different Museums, let's see...

Thanks to all who like that humble report that much!
Jordi, I agree: The threads would not appear coherent if they'd be unified. But an idea for not making too much mess with the Marburg Museum threads: If i take more pictures and publish them here (i hope it will be within 2012), i will use this thread. This would also be coherent with the thread name "2012 impressions" :-)

chris wrote:

Well, if you want to have the giant Neudorf galena, just contact the Museum of Mineralogy and Geology in Dresden that gave this specimen on loan. It only depens on how much you can afford. Maybe 100.000 could be a good first offer ... ;-)

Good news for all who enjoyed my report: I took another trip today (it is really an advantage to live only 10-15 minutes away from one of Germany's most prominent mineral museums) and took more photos. Here we go:
