Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I fear that the agate has been dyed.

What makes you believe that it is dyed?

I agree... Dyed. If you visit amethyst-bearing basalts, you will see only colourless, pale grey or pale bluish agate around the basalt vugs, no black.

In the past, the usual way to make agate black was to soak it for months in sugar water and then in sulphuric acid, which carbonized the sugar. I'm not sure whether that is still done or whether there is a more modern process with synthetic dyes?

Black chalcedony (aka onyx) is brown to very dark brown. But truly black onyx is very rare, if any. It is quite common that onyx is dyed to make it really black.
