Thank you for your contribution Peter. I suppose in my 'simple' world, this is the best way to look at things: 'I think it is more reasonable to consider these crystals to represent a chance inter growth, and enjoy them as they are.'
I have found that this type of growth (as the specimen in question) is very uncommon (with that angle) from our area, as well as the other areas in Southern Africa that I am familiar with. I am including another photo of a similar specimen that I collected a number of years ago. I still have it somewhere in a box but managed to find these 2 photos. Regards.

Hi good friends Mike and Don. Thank you for your comments. Sorry, but the photos are not that good. If I find this little specimen, I might rephotograph it. Best regards.

PostPosted: Sep 24, 2014 02:49    Post subject: Re: Quartz collecting outings in South Africa

Since my last post I have been out on a number of crystal outings with some interesting finds. A year or two ago, I discovered a small valley with lots of quartz veins and a few small insignificant crystals. About 2 weeks ago, I stumbled on to this same valley and looked around again. I found a promising crystal at a place where I dug previously and decided to spend some time there. Not long thereafter, I started finding small flat crystals, some with fadens and phantoms, others with chlorite. After a while, I started finding a few larger specimens, some with very interesting growth patterns; most of these had phantoms and fadens. The pocket under the rock still has some more crystals in, but I left these for Riana to remove. The area where I found these are just about 2 km from our home. It is not a safe area of our mountains as there are 'bergies' (mountain dwellers) living there. Some of these are criminals. If I take Riana there, I will take a firearm with, just in case. In the last few months, I just realized again, that crystal deposits are NOT easy to find. You may find a lot when you do, but these are few and far between.

Congratulations on your finds friend Pierre. The fact that you found quartz is very interesting. It's a good combination of faden type and the ghosts of chlorite. Get a sample for Riana. ;-)

Best Regards,-)

Hi James. Thank you for your comment. I was saying to someone else today, it is a shame that we live in such a stunning place and are often so busy that we can not venture out into the mountains (which is just a few minutes walk from our home). I have not even been troutfishing this season yet! (which started beginning September). Joan Martinez is planning a trip, why not you also?

So many place to visit! This year I have been to Mexico (where I spent my childhood) and have been invited to lots of other great places. So I think we need to plan where to go next - maybe SA will be in that list.

Hello Pierre!

Wonderful place where you are living. So far, I did not know, that you have so high mountains in your area. Nice Quartz specimens you find, especially with the faden.

BTW, here in the European Alps, we don't need firearms for collecting minerals. ;)

Best wishes
Martin

Hi Martin. The mountains around us are not nearly as high as a mountain series about 50 km away. Having said that, I do not think South Africa's mountains are anything as high as yours. South Africa is a stunning place but the crime and murder rate is very high. Very few South Africans have not experienced some or other, or multiple, burglaries or robberies. Ceres is much quieter than the cities. I see you have a serious problem with dogs in your country:-) Don't we all.

Hi GneissWare. Thank you for your comment. These quartzes are indeed very special. I cannot show the formation off properly with photos alone. A video would show it much better. I hope to post a few more photos from specimens from this pocket next week, showing fadens, phantoms and chlorite inclusions. Best regards.

Thank you Chris. Comments like this makes it more than worth my while. There are many that do not have the privilege we have to enjoy nature (and it's treasures) on our doorstep and I share this with the hope that, especially such people, may enjoy our experiences.

Yesterday afternoon, I took Riana to the place mentioned in recent posts. It was hot but as we left later in the afternoon, we had very nice weather. We did not find as many crystals as we hoped but still found a few nice specimens (which yet have to be cleaned). There could be some more crystals but it is so awkward crawling under a large rock, with very little space, that we have now abandoned this spot.
