Hi Matt,

Thanks for your efforts ! I really enjoy the photos from the Westward Look show which I miss very much this year. It is really THE show the see the very best (and most expensive..).
I hope you will be posting more photos today and that you especially manage to take pictures of some of the best specimens from the Gilles Emringer collection offered by Crystal Classics/Kristalle before they are dispersed to eager buyers ( I hear the Smithsonian has been offered the first pick...)
Have fun..

Knut

Hello Matt,

thank you very much for the excellent photo's of minerals, they are very cool to look at for those of us who can't be there. Your efforts are very much appreciated ! By the way, it's probably just me but the photo's (0226 - 0229) of the pale yellow/brown fluorites from Huanggangliang Mine, remind me very much of phenakite...

Keep 'em coming Matt !

Regards, Mike

PostPosted: Feb 10, 2013 00:32    Post subject: Re: Tucson Show 2013

The last two days I have been at the Westward Look. I did get just a few picts of the Gilles Emringer collection in Crystal Classics/Kristale's room and I had a chat with Robyn and she said they were going to post more picts of this important collection on their website.

Maybe its just me but I felt more excited about the specimens on display at the WL this year. Last year it seemed to me that there was not that much new stuff on display, even though I am sure there was. Perhaps it is just that this year there is more stuff that appeals to my *unique* tastes, such as they are. Just a general impression.

Anyway...on to the pictures.

More picts from Rob's room and then, since it was getting late, I headed up to see Kevin Brown's display of generally equally sized specimens from across the USA. I didn't get to talk to Kevin because there were so many people and I didn't want to impose, but I did overhear Kevin telling someone that his goal with this suite is to get a specimen from every state. I'd say he has had quite some success. It was a very good exhibition - much fun. I have posted the few pictures I have that were not terribly blurry.

Mike, is true that https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/files/img_0227_179.jpg by photo it could looks so much as a Phenakite, so this morning I came to that room and I checked it carefully and without doubt is a Fluorite equal as his sister: https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/files/img_0235_196.jpg where we can see something similar but showing better its Fluorite's shape.

Jordi, many thanks for putting my mind at ease about the fluorites. If they had been phenakites they would have been mind-blowing ! Still, they are very interesting and beautiful fluorites.
Thanks again Matt for putting up the photo's so those who can't be there can drool over the specimens without getting them wet : )

Thank you very much for all the great Tucson Show posts and mineral specimens. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend this year and I am suffering severe withdrawal symptoms. Your efforts are appreciated here in Canada.

Hi all,

Since Matt posted a pic of the blue halite in Kevin's collection, I thought it would be nice for people to see the great color in the form of a Jeff Scovil photo. It's from the Intrepid Potash East mine and is 8.1 cm.

PostPosted: Feb 10, 2013 23:03    Post subject: Re: Tucson Show 2013

Thanks Matt, for the report and all the pics. I hope you have more to post.

I was in Tucson from Wednesday thru Saturday morning. Weather was fantastic before the cold front came in bringing cooler temps, rain, and some snow at higher elevations. Still, Saturday was a nice morning, if a little cool.

Wendy's Minerals at the Inn Suites had a fine assortment of Chinese minerals, including some great pink fluorites on matrix from Inner Mongolia. Nice contrast of the pink fluorites with the green crystals, and black matrix.....sorry I don't remember what the green crystals were.

She also had some pink fluorite octahedrons from a pocket found near the end of 2012......said that it was a small pocket and all the crystals were found on the bottom of the pocket as floaters. Here are a couple shots of a specimen that I took when I got home.

The specimen was lit from the side with window light. About 83 mm in height from the top of the acrylic block, the octahedron has pink phantoms, and a dark phantom in the center due to metallic inclusions along a growth plane.

PostPosted: Feb 11, 2013 20:17    Post subject: Re: Tucson Show 2013

Pretty miserable day in Tucson today. Lucky me, I had to work. It is 38 degrees (3C) and raining with a forecasted evening low of 30 degrees (-1C). I posted a few pics of the Catalina's, view from my desk. During the rain and after. On Friday late afternoon and Saturday I spend some time at the Westward but with only a Blackberry. So a few poor quality pics of the 3 specimens that really stopped me. Of course Mexican specimens.

But I got seriously distracted by the recently acquired collection of french fluorite and more that Kristalle had in their cases.

On Sunday, I saw a few nice things back at the Tucson City Hotel. Got to Jordi room, Fabre Minerals and found a nice array of minerals in the duftite-Conichalcite serie from Mapimi. Also in Xtal - Dennis Beals Minerals some new interesting bluish grey quartz from Sta Eulalia with a nice druze of siderite ps after calcite. Lovely little pieces. I will try to get photos later on Wednesday, if any are left.

Today I went back to the Westward Look and then down to the Inn Suites.

When I got to the WL around 2-3pm, I'd say half of the dealers were already packing up. I believe the weather lowered the traffic at the show and so the dealers decided to pack it in early. But I did get some picts as shown below.

First is Dave Bunk's room.

After leaving Wendel's room, the WL show was pretty much finished so I decided to go down to the Inn Suites. As I left the WL, the clouds had cleared somewhat, and I could see snow about half way down the slopes.

The temperature seemed to fall more by the time I got down to the Inn Suites, and almost all the doors to the rooms were closed, although I could see people still looking at Minerals in rooms with open curtains. I went to Jordi's room to yak it up - the only pictures I took were of an excellent Elmwood fluorite with Carthage corners.

Thank you Matt, Jean and others for an interesting report. Wow, I can live well for a while on the price of some of those specimens! I feel sorry for Joseph, stuck in the snow.

There are many of us who are grateful for the mineralk photos and information about what was offered in Tucson this year. We are looking forward to the last photos from the Main Show. Thanks for your efforts !

Thanks again for the encouragement everyone. Today I spent some more time at the Inn Suites.

These are some new (at least new to me) fluorites from Ruyuan. They form stepped ball like Shangbao, but the steps are smaller and the luster is better. This piece is in good shape and really stood out. In Xiaoxiang Crystal Mineral Museum's room.

More neat fluorite. Marked as coming from "Lin Wu" and probably from the several fluorite mines in Linwu county.

Another new (to me) style of fluorite have these "hats" of rectangular over-growths on only one or two faces. Very cool. These are marked as coming from Chenzhou Prefecture, so I don't know what mine they come from, but again, there are famous fluorite mines like Xianghualing and Xianghuapu in Linwu Co, which is in Chenzhou. It is pure speculation but perhaps these come from there.
