PostPosted: May 01, 2017 22:27    Post subject: Re: Don Lum Collection

Jimmy and Hisami McNeil are two of the nicest people one could ever hope to meet. They are fellow members of the Memphis Archaeological and Geological Society.

From about 1984-1994, Jimmy and Hisami along with several other mining partners collected at the Stand-on-Your-Head Mine in Saline County, Arkansas. They gave their claim its moniker because to mine the pocket, you had to crawl on your hands and knees into a narrow hole that was at a steep downward angle and reach in with a pry bar to collect the specimens. About 1988-1989 they hit a pocket of green Cookeite with Quartz. They did not know at the time what the green mineral was so Jimmy sent a sample to his friend, Andy Deetz, who worked at the Smithsonian. He took the sample to Mr. John S. White who identified the mineral as Cookeite (personal communication with Jimmy McNeil).

In addition to the Cookeite, tabular quartz, quartz with parallel growth habit, and faden quartz were found.

Really nice specimens Don, I especially like that Millerite!

When I first started collecting minerals in college, I always thought that cookeite was pronounced like the dessert, so I called it cook-ee-ite. I was a little disappointed when I found out that it wasn't pronounced that way...

I have never see this association of quartz and Rogerley fluorite.
Great contrast; I like it a lot.

I like it, too. What an unusual and beautiful Rogerley specimen, that quartz coating gives it a special touch. Great one, Don :-)
