PostPosted: Apr 22, 2013 19:46    Post subject: Trip to Namibia

Dear Colleagues,
My name is Julio Landmann and I am just joining this Forum.
I have a small mineral museum in São Paulo, Brazil and have been collecting minerals for more than 50 years. Some of my minerals, as well as photos (including the cover), can be seen in the recently published book: Minerals and Precious Stones of Brazil, by Cornejo and Bartorelli.
I shall be travelling to Namibia from May 05th through May 22nd and wonder if some of you have tips on private collections and or mines that are worth to be visited during the mentioned trip.
Any suggestions will be very much appreciated!
Thank you!!

Welcome to FMF Julio, below I added the cover of the book you mentioned.

I hope that some of our FMFers from South Africa or Namibia could help you in your trip. Pierre? Xenolithos? Debbie...? ;-)

Hello Julio

Whilst in Windhoek you should see if you can visit House of Gems perhaps you could make an appointment or contact with Ernst Schnaitmann, I don't think I'm allowed to give his website details here so private message me if you want. There is a museum in the geological survey office at the Ministry of Mines building.

I think collecting is allowed at Aris. The Erongo mtn is always a good bet, Henkel's in Karibib, Christopher Johnston in Omaruru ? Swakopmund has a few dealers who may be able to give tips ? Plus 2 museums here. Heini Soltau is a well known collector in Lüderitz. The Goboboseb mnt, Brandberg West mine, Messum crater, Grootberg pass, Skorpion mine, all possible collecting sites to name a few.

I hope this helps.

Dear Jordi,
Thank you for including the book cover, what a good idea. It will take me some time to fully make use of all the tools available in this Forum.
A big abraço,
Julio

Dear Pierre,
Thank you for offering to help me. We (my wife and I) shall be arriving at Windhoek on May 05 in the morning and will depart on the following day to Fish River Canyon. I do not have the detailed plan yet but I know that we are going to pass through the following place:
Khorixas;Swakopmund;Sossusvlei;Marienfluss and Etosha (not too far from Tsumeb).
In total we are travelling 16 days in Namibia.
Any suggestions that I might squeeze into my itinerary will be highly appreciated!
My very best Brazilian regards,
Julio

Julio

Please note that for legal export you need to clear all the specimens you acquire in Namibia with the geological survey office at the Ministry of Mines building in Windhoek. Failure to do this may result in all of them being confiscated by Customs. You will need to set aside a few hours for this before departure.

Dear Duncan
Many thanks!!
I guess this will make it almost impossible to purchase any specimen due to my very limited time in Windhoek. Let's play it by ear.
My very best regards and thank you for this extremely valuable information.
Julio
