Thank you Pierre and Mike,
I will do a close up of that quartz plate (image 634) for you Mike. Although I collected that maybe 20 years ago I remember we'll that the plates in the pocket were covered in about 8cm of soft manganese. By the time I had finished collecting the pocket I was black from head to toe :) great fun.

Hi Greg,
Thanks for sharing the close-up photo of the quartz / pseudomorphed calcite specimen 634ap.JPG ( https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/files/634ap_108.jpg ) it's a rather nice combination and colour. Hard to imagine it when it was dug out, all covered in black manganese gunge. I like your other quartzes too and your photography is good.

Cheers, Mike

Thanks Pierre and Mike,
I was always happy when the quartz pockets were filled with manganese because it made the cleaning so much easier than iron staining. Some more NZ pieces first, with close ups for detail,
Greg

Hi Greg. Lovely quartz specimens from NZ. Try photographing the Brandberg smoky crystal with a lighter colour background; and besides normal lighting, try using a flash too. I have discovered that putting tracing paper over my background paper gives a much 'softer' background effect.

Thanks Mike,
It was from a collection which I purchased about 4 years ago and luckily almost everything was numbered and well catalogued.

Greg,

I like your Jeffrey Quartz floater. These are sometimes called haystack burrs around here.

Hi Don,
Sorry for the delayed response, we have been on holiday.
I love these quartz clusters. About 10 years ago we went to the West Coast Show and stopped into Arkansas on the way to do some digging. Didn't find much but had a great time and managed to get some nice things with the silver pick! I would love to get back there again, beautiful countryside and great rocks.

Time for some more photos, I have been trying to find something which I can use as reflectors for my NZ quartz specimens which wont impart a yellow cast when I photograph them. The material is generally very white, any ideas?

Greg,

Gail posted a report on Perot Museum Golds which shows world renown photographer Joaquim Callen at work: https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=30528#30528 Please see this picture: https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/files/dsc_0769_159.jpg on that report.

I don't know if this will help but may give you some ideas.

Sincerely,

Don

Greg,

You can also use white copy paper or thin white plastic to reflect your light or to use between your light source and the subject.
