With summer fast approaching here in New Zealand my posts might be few and far between but here are some self collected pieces from NZ and one from Australia,

Hi Greg, these are nice quartz specimens; thanks for posting. Was curious to know what Tinkers Creek looked like, do you have a photo of the area you could share?

Hi Mike,
sorry for the delayed response. Here are a couple of photos of the Tinkers Gully area.
Tinkers Gully is only ablout 10 min drive from the township of Thames. It was prospected heavily in the late 1800s and there was a battery situated near the area that is now used for a carpark. It is a steep sided gutter that runs into the main Tararu River. The area is densly covered by regenerating bush so it can be hard work getting through it. This terrain and vegetation cover is typical for collecting spots in the Coromandel Area.
Luckily we dont have many nasty insects here.

Hi Greg, thanks for posting the pictures of Tinkers' Gully. Looks pretty densely wooded, I suppose the foliage would make it more difficult to travel if you were off the beaten track; on the plus side it would hide you from prying eyes.
Do you have Rangers wandering about keeping an eye on things (like in the National Parks in the UK) or is NZ a lot more liberated than this. I mean is 'rock collecting' allowed in most areas of New Zealand.

Hi Mike,
It can be really hard going and the hike into many of the collecting spots can be an hour or more. The good thing about this less people tend to visit them :)
I have never seen a ranger but they are about. There are limitations on fossicking,things like use of hand tools only and a maximum weight limit of a couple of kilos. Most of the areas we go into are way off the beaten track and we virtually never see anyone.
