Very sexy indeed, Jordi. I am surprised that this one got past the censorship committee ;-)

A specimen of Pyrite from Mt. Wellington Mine, near to Wheal Jane, Baldhu, Cornwall. I managed to collect a dozen or so pieces of this material, 5 levels down from surface,in the 'back' of an inclined stope, just before the pumps were turned off at Wheal Jane in the 90's.

A specimen of Galena from Wheal Jane Mine, Cornwall - extracted (1990) during the final years before closure. Its thought that the Galena was found in and near lode intersections with cosscourse fractures on South Lode.

An old, large Fluorite from Wheal Buller, Cornwall - trying to clean this up but don't have a needle water jet tool - I would love one!. It was found in a low Cornish hedge/wall at the site, in 1988. A bit rough, but a significant piece.

Great contributions to this thread, guys!

Jose: A really good idea to make a stereo photo, I always love to see this kind of 3D-pictures.
Jesse: As usual, your fluorite specimens are a pleasure to view, especially the one from East Pool Mine.
Jordi: I think no further comment on the "sexy" chalcopyrite is needed, for it now has its own thread ( https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=56989#56989 ) ;-)
Mark: Interesting fluorite from Wheal Buller, reminds me of some several fluorites from Germany (Bavaria and Saxony).
James: Great bournonite specimen - and painting.

PostPosted: May 15, 2017 07:47    Post subject: Re: A mineralogical trip through the regions of the UK - England / Cornwall

More about that historical Coxe Hippisley collection.

Item 6 of this article by Sir Arthur Russell mentions this collection.

https://www.minersoc.org/pages/Archive-MM/Volume_27/27-184-1.pdf

It also mentions Dr Gunther, who produced a set of notes about the collection!

https://www.worldcat.org/title/a-collection-of-manuscript-notes-relating-to-the-lady-hippisley-collection-of-minerals/oclc/182794258

I wonder if we can find an e-copy? The Natural History Museum may have them?

According to this other article by Sir Arthur Russell, she bought specimens from Heuland in 1809 (p399):

https://www.minersoc.org/pages/Archive-MM/Volume_29/29-211-395.pdf

So we are looking at an old specimen as she lived from 1760-1843, so from the early 19th century after her marriage (which was in 1801)?

Mark, great to see new specimens being added. Do drop me a message (PM) if the locality you want to use does not exist, as I manage the database of UK localities.

A rare specimen of Almandine(?) Garnet from pegmatite at Megilligar Rocks, Tremearne Cliff, Porthleven, Cornwall (from the back-beach exposure). I am informed it is dodecahedral in form, though this is difficult to make out in the image. In Cornwall, Garnet in pegmatite is virtually unheard of.
