Hi,
Here's a big nugget. This photo was published in the Buttgenbach’s book (Minerals of Belgium and Belgian Congo). It is a document of the Great Lakes Mining Company.
This nugget weighed 64,707 kg. It was found in the Lukala.
Is this a record?
What happened to it? Incorporated into a gold ingot of Fort Knox?
I have not been able to locate the Lukala. I believe that this small river in the Great Lakes Region.
Is it the biggest nugget found in the world?
Roger.

Mark, it is too heavy to carry for you alone!

Some Wikipedia info. This Congolese nuggets is right up there among the largest found.

Considered by most to be the biggest gold nugget ever found, the Welcome Stranger was found at Moliagul, Victoria, Australia in 1869 by John Deason and Richard Oates. It weighed gross, over 2,520 troy ounces (78 kg) and returned over 2,284 troy ounces (71.0 kg) net.[5] The Welcome Stranger is sometimes confused with the similarly named Welcome nugget, which was found in June 1858 at Bakery Hill, Ballarat, Australia by the Red Hill Mining Company. The Welcome weighed 2,218 troy ounces (69.0 kg). It was melted down in London in Nov 1859.[6]

The Canaã nugget, also known as the Pepita Canaa, was found in Sept 13, 1983 by miners at the Serra Pelada Mine in the State of Para, Brazil. Weighing in at 60.82 kilograms (2,145 oz), it is considered by most to be among the largest gold nuggets ever found,[7][8] and is, today, the largest in existence. The main controversy regarding this nugget is that the excavation reports suggest that the existing nugget may have been originally part of a nugget weighing 5,291.09 ounces (150.000 kg) that broke during excavations.[9] Canaã is displayed at the Banco Central Museum in Brazil along with the second and third largest nuggets remaining in existence, weighing respectively 1,506.2 ounces (42.70 kg) and 1,393.3 ounces (39.50 kg), which were also found at the Serra Pelada region

Are volunteering to help move it Peter? You know we are going to have to cut Roger in as he brought up the subject.

I'll pick you up at Norfolk International! Of course this does raise some complications as Jordi has been mercilessly after me to buy his entire inventory. I have been able to plead poverty so far but if this gets out, I run out of an excuse. Then doubtless the moderators all will demand their share.......sigh..............as you see the list is endless.

While both the Welcome Stranger and Welcome nuggets were melted down, replicas exist. The Welcome Stranger replica was in Museum Victoria, and there is a memorial cairn with a replica of the Welcome nugget in Sturt Street, Ballarat, not far from where it was found.
