OK. Let's try...

Were these part of a collection owned by Washington Roebling? Famous civil war engineer of bridges, including the Brooklyn Bridge.

Yes. The Smithsonian received the Roebling collection in 1927, just one year after the Canfield collection. Many Roebling specimens were subsequently traded by the museum but this was not true for the Canfield collection because the Canfield deed of gift forbid disposing of any of its specimens. In spite of this a relatively small number of Canfield specimens found their way into private hands.

Thanks to both of you. I did drop by Jordi's bio on the way out of the web site though no mention was made of his prodigious Rioja collection. Also noted Roebling was an unfortunate recipient of "caissons's disease, which I am familiar with as an ex Navy Diver.

Yes, Mark. The first specimen was part of Washington Roebling 's Collection. He was the son of John A. Roebling, who designed the Brooklyn Bridge, but died as a result of an accident while conducting a survey for the bridge. Before he died, he placed his son in charge of the project. Washington Roebling also designed the suspension bridge to the Ojuela Mine. His collection of 16,000+ specimens was donated to the Smithsonian by his son, John A. Roebling II.

ps. I see that your questions were answered as I posted this. Sorry for the duplicity.

PostPosted: Jan 01, 2014 13:03    Post subject: Re: Mineral Museums and their Labels

All,
Anyone would know if it is possible to get more "historical details" on specimens from the Roebling collection. I have two former Roebling specimens and now this thread has pinched my curiosity.

Would it be possible to know when the specimens were acquired by Roebling himself?

Thanks
Jean

No. Unfortunately Roebling did not have a catalog, or at least one did not come to the museum with the collection so such information does not exist.

Thanks John,

At least I know it is prior 1926, the numbers are in the 2,000. Which according to the MinRec, 0-6,000, were acquired by Roebling. Higher number were acquired with the endowment funds.

Cheers

Jean
