PostPosted: Mar 10, 2014 20:39    Post subject: Cleaning Quartz specimens?

Hi, just found by first quartz pocket completely by accident about 2 feet by 1 foot, on my own property so I have it all to myself, and I would like some advice on how to remove crystals and matrix from the ceiling and far back? the crystals aren't large enough to pull out individually. Thanks, for reading this far, and I was wondering how I could clean some of the hard clay/dirt out from the crystals? some are brittle and I want to avoid damaging them.

If you can post a few pictures of your find, that will help a lot. First rinse off as much clay under pressure using a garden hose. Place the specimens in a small bucket with holes and place this container in a slightly larger bucket with a solution of luke warm water with Oxalic acid. Leave for about 2 days in a ventilated area in the sun (if possible). Hereafter, rinse under water, further cleaning with soap and a toothbrush. If there is stubborn clay, just repeat the process.
